My composition module mark sheet says (as far as we can work out from the awful writing) that I haven't put phrase marks in. huh.gif How are ou supposed to put phrases in? If you play it through the shape etc of it make it blatantly obvious that they are 4 bar phrases blink.gif

Piano music does often have phrase marks, but it does seem like a harsh thing to lose marks on - if it was a wind instrument then it would be fair... sad.gif

So... how do I put phrase marks in though?? I'd like to get more than 4/10 for presentation this time!!

Ouch! I bet you would sad.gif

I think the usual way is like long slurs or ties over the phrases...

I'm just going to go grab some books to check, I'll be back smile.gif

Fab thanks Sarah. I was not sure if the long ties things would be right.

In the musical example in the following link is a very interesting case of how a master composer differently phrases identical material when using both piano and strings: http://yost.com/music/ravel-trio/index.html .

I just looked through the 3 Classics to Moderns books I had out downstairs, I'd estimate that no more than half of the pieces have phrase marks but it is there. Where they're mark, they are all basically long ties/slurs over the phrases, so I should think that would be OK (more knowledgeable people might know more!), if it's how it's marked in specific piano books then I would think that should be OK.

Ok, thanks Sarah and Storini.

Ahhh yeah, that's helpful! I tried and failed to work out how I could post an example. That's exactly how things are phrased in the books I have where there are phrase marks.
