Full Version: Starting To Teach

Hi all, just after some general advice.

I'm starting to teach after a long period of illness (RSI), partly because I've always wanted to and partly because I need some sort of income and am still limited in how much I can take on (ie I am not quite better but doctor is recomending I do small amount of work to aid healing etc). I did some teaching pre-music college but due to the move from Scotland to England I had to give it up and throughout my degree I didn't have time to teach as my rehearsals were mostly in the evenings. I'm not able to take on a part time job (unless I can find one that is suitable and under eight hours - past sixth months has turned up nothing) and do not qualify for any benefits because of my age and my fiance's employment.

If you can think back to when you started teaching just how did you get your students? Yellow Pages, Yell.com, shop ads, local paper, word of mouth, websites, etc.? I'm not sure if it woud be appropriate to contact the heads of music at the local schools or if they'd just ignore me and the same for the local music service.

Would really appreciate some suggestions.

Thanks
margaret
Hello
If you go to the second page of the teachers forum you will see someone else posted a question on advertising etc. They got lots of useful answers which may be of help to you. Good luck rolleyes.gif

Ahh thanks for that. I missed it when I looked through the first few pages. biggrin.gif

Ok slight change of tack...

What's the best way of approaching a school if you don't have any children of your own?

I telephoned all the local schools and asked if they would consider displaying a poster.
They all asked me to drop one off at the office (hope they used them but I had no replies). I was able to include a telephone reference contact number in case they wanted to check me out first as I do volunteer work in one school.
