Although I'm going off mozart but I think that's because I murder it.
saxlover
Nov 1 2005, 05:07 PM
You can't murder one of my favourite pieces ever!
elmo
Nov 1 2005, 05:11 PM
well I just sound a bit naff at the moment which is demoralising since I'm doing masses of practice
saxlover
Nov 1 2005, 05:12 PM
At least you are doing lots of practice! I need to get myself sorted..I'm not doing half as much as I should be.
elmo
Nov 1 2005, 05:14 PM
well according to my teacher neither am I!
I'm having to bribe myself, 2 points for 15 minutes, 1 point for a rehearsal and 2 points for a clarinet lesson.
saxlover
Nov 1 2005, 05:14 PM
I need to do some..but I have nothing on tomorrow, so might get on with some work and practice
elmo
Nov 1 2005, 05:15 PM
Don't you just hate days like that? Where you sit in your room and look at your books!? ARGGHHH!! I know it's uni, but even though I can hear the guy downstairs it/s really isolating!
saxlover
Nov 1 2005, 05:20 PM
No, I go to the library in the music dept. I can't work in my room..too many distractions..and a lot of the work requires reading the grove and listening to cd's..so I need to go to the library
elmo
Nov 1 2005, 05:22 PM
you have a music library?! *glares in envy!*
saxlover
Nov 1 2005, 05:23 PM
Yeah

Nov 1 2005, 05:48 PM
Izzy, sometimes when you start doing more practice you start to hear all the more all the things you're doing wrong (and especially if your teacher is pushing you hard, which it sounds like he is!) but it might actually be that what now sounds bad to you is actually pretty good, if that makes sense? What I'm trying to say is don't despair

I'm sure you're probably doing way better than you think you are

Elmo - does your university have access to the Naxos music library?
elmo
Nov 1 2005, 09:52 PM
I dunno, but I could find out. I've heard of it, but can't remember if it's been mentioned on here or uni.
why?

Just wondering, you were just a bit jealous about Bangor's music library.
Ask your library if they know anything about it - it may well be that they have an account. If they do, you can listen to any Naxos recording ever through www.naxosmusiclibrary.com

i can't believe this. i'm being beaten by you two. poulenc good, mozart bad. did you know the nazis listened to mozart whilst watching their mass extermination of the jews? i know that's actually not a good reason for your not liking mozart! but it's my reason.
i love the poulenc sonata. anybody else prefer it to the concerto?
in fact there will be a poll!

Haven't had a chance to ask about naxos yet.
I think Mozart is more enjoyable to play, but I wouldn't call it the ultimate concerto/sonata

Wagner actually, not Mozart, according to popular legend. The more observant amongst you will of course be aware that both Mozart and Wagner were long dead by the start of the Second World War and its atrocities took place, so couldn't stop anyone hijacking their music for their own dubious means. Not that this has any relevance whatsoever to the original thread.
Elmo, how are you doing with the Poulenc? You realise you inspired me to dust off my copy and play it through the other day! What kind of stupid idea is the top G sharp at the end
elmo
Nov 3 2005, 05:04 PM
ooh don't even go there! I haven't got to the end of the first and second movements yet!
I can play the notes, but I don't play with any expression, apparently.

And realistically I don't think I'm going to be able to learn it to a good performance standard by my performance exam in 4 weeks, and would rather play Weber which I've been working on for weeks now. But my teacher isn't listening and keeps patronising me by telling me it's coming, when a few seconds ago he'd been telling me it was sounding boring.
Anyway I won't bore you with my ranting any longer!
Haven't heard the Wagner. And as quite a lot of the German population were Nazis/forced to be Nazis, and as Mozart is a popular composer, they weren't exactly listening to it specifically coz they were killing Jews.
Oh I know what I mean even if I'm not explaining it very well!

In terms of stories and imagery, I don't "get" what's happening in the monotonous bit on the 3rd page. What's that all about?!

Elmo, which movement and bar? Poulenc often has crazy things happening in the accompaniment.
Bb Clarinet, apology accepted. Have you now listened to some Mozart?

Deborah
Nov 7 2005, 01:03 PM
elmo, assuming I can count correctly, bar 86 is figure 9 in my copy, which is the pianissimo doucement monotone section where you are running up and down a B minor arpeggio. I always think this is sultry, like an oppresively hot summer's day, where all you want to do is sit in the shade and eat ice-cream.
Poulenc is often deadly serious or poking his tounge out in fun

and the two moods are juxtaposed to heighten tension or highlight the humour - much like anyone ever told you about Shakespeare.
Nat, yes I have played Mozart!
saxlover
Nov 7 2005, 02:12 PM
That's good Deborah!
elmo
Nov 7 2005, 02:46 PM
ok hot and eating ice cream..... got it! Will try it next time I practice!
I had to practice in the common room the other day, and the warden lives above that room, so I just played that bit over and over again coz it's a quiet bit! I didn't quite ever get the mood though
saxlover
Nov 7 2005, 02:47 PM
Chill!! It's not just going to come with the click of your finger, it'll take practice!
elmo
Nov 7 2005, 02:49 PM
oh I know it will take practice, but I'm still fighting with him as to whether it'll be ready by December!
saxlover
Nov 7 2005, 02:50 PM
Tell him, that it is your exam and so you have the final word in what you play. If he doesn't like that then it is his problem!
elmo
Nov 7 2005, 02:52 PM
I told him, and he's still adament! (sp?!) I kept saying "oooh I like the saint saens!" or whatever it is!

saxlover
Nov 7 2005, 03:04 PM

Tell him that you really don't want to do it and that you don't think you'll get good marks by playing it because you don't like it.
elmo
Nov 7 2005, 03:05 PM
*nods* I'll try
saxlover
Nov 7 2005, 03:08 PM
Good!
It's not worth worrying about the exam because you don't like the piece! So just tell him!
