Has anyone here played Mozarts Piano Concerto No. 20 and 21? What do you think of them?

Friend of mine did the 2nd movement of No.21, is struggling with the 1st and 3rd movements. I think 21 is glorious, then again, I'm not a pianist so what would I know?

But I'm not. I only play Bassoon (doing 8, struggling with 5 theory) and a bit of recorder! sad.gif

I've heard the 21st. It's nice.

Played it, if only. laugh.gif

More than just nice, I would say. biggrin.gif
The 21th's slow movement has been famous since its use in a film, "Elvira Madigan". It's like the slowest possible music without being boring.
The 20th concerto was Mendelssohn's favourite one (and Beethoven's too, I think). Especially the first movement is full of unexpected turns.
Clara Haskill played these things very well.

Yeah Im slowly learning them. Nearly have the first movement of No.20 finished. But yes, they are beautiful.

I've played No. 21 with an amateur orchestra - great experience. The rondo finale is tricky as there are so many chops and changes. Octaves in the first movement development can be tiring too. The second movement, although simple, is difficult to find the 'right' tempo for.
Then there's the issue of trying to find cadenzas - Mozart didn't write any for this concerto so I ended up using a mixture written by other people (didn't have time to write my own!)
I found it quite easy to memorise as a lot of material is repeated. For one of the 'easier' concertos in the repertoire it certainly isn't very easy! Good luck with them.
