hello

i was wondering how hard it would be to start getting cello lessons?

I have played violin for approximately 7 years, but i stopped in the middle for some reason and picked it up again.

I really like the cello and its sound so it would be grateful to know any differences. Except the obvious, bass clef, sitting down.

THANK You

Hiya!

Not sure what you mean by hard.

If you mean actually playing it, then you'll have a head start by having a violin background. smile.gif

If you mean going about finding a teacher, then you could try musicteachers.co.uk, the local Yellow Pages or, if you live in a big enough town, advertise at the local Uni/Music Colleges for a student teacher. That will get you lessons WAY cheaper than a regular teacher.

Hope that helps!

I'm absolutely dying to take cello lessons myself, we're just SO short on cash...... unsure.gif

There's a couple of people in this thread who have done what you are thinking about. As the bow holds for the two instruments are a bit different, I'm not sure whether they might "interfere" with each other. Any reason why you shouldn't concentrate on getting up to G8 on violin first? Or maybe take up an instrument from a completely different family, e.g. French Horn, if you really have the time to do two?

Thanks Marc!!

Well, if I do, then we can compare notes, yeah?? laugh.gif

From what I understand, the posture makes cello a bit more comfy to learn than the smaller stringed instruments. That's one reason I chose it - I've had M.E. for a while and couldn't think about holding a viola up!!

I sort of play the violin (very badly) and my daughter is learning the cello, I have been able to pick up what she is doing with no problem at all, so I'm sure you'll be fine. As for the base clef thing, you know the theory so will soon pick it up.

I have a friend who can play both the Violin and Cello (and the Double Bass, Guitar, Alto Saxophone, Soprano Saxophone, Piano, Clarinet, Percussion and a few notes on the trumpet) and she is often known to attend lessons for both the violin and the cello on the same day and not have any problems.
