hi, anyone doing trinity grade 5 violin exam?
compare with abrsm grade 5, which one is tougher or it's abt the same?

i look at the syllabus of both exam boards, seems like ABRSM has got lots of Scales. For Trinity, one can choose either scales & arpeggios or scale study. Does anyone know what is "scale study - Cohen" listed under the Trinity's syallbus?

viva voce Vs performance from memory - which one is more challenging?

ear test or aural awareness - what's the main difference?

thank you in advance for any views shared rolleyes.gif

When I questioned the possibility of doing Trinity (although it was a different grade but I imagine the same is true for G5) I was told...
1) The pieces are generally harder
2) There are pretty much the same number of scales, and in the grades where there are fewer you have to know the diminished 7th, dominant 7th, chromatic, 2 arpeggios and 2 scales. And they go higher in general.
3) Some of the aural etc is easier.
4) If you are going to be taking ABRSM grades 6-8 then do ABRSM as it eases you into it better.
5) ABRSM is much more respected.
6) If you do Trinity, people will wonder whether it's because you don't like scales/aural (only true for some instruments, but apparently violin is one).
This is just the philosophy of the people I've spoken to at my school, but it's probably worth considering.

Hint on the scales: Anything (scale/arpeggio/dom 7th/dim 7th/chrom) from B flat upwards can have exactly the same fingering, but just with everything shifted up the fingerboard a bit. Same with A flat and A. Same with E flat, E, F and F sharp.

hey thanks! smile.gif

I've compared.

ABRSM:
scales & arpeggios for Grade 5 violin - Ab, B, C, Eb, E majors & G#, B, C, E minors (two octaves)
minor can be in harmonic or melodic at the choice of candidate
G major & G minor (3 octaves)

chromatic G, A, Bb (2 octaves)

dominanth 7th - in key of Bb, C & D (2 octaves)
diminished 7th - on open string G, D & A ( 1 octave)

Trinity:
scales & arpeggios for Grade 5 violin - Eb & F major ( 2 octaves)
A major - (1 octave)
G major ( 3 octaves)
G minor, melodic ( 3 octaves)
Eb & F minor, melodic (2 octaves)

Chromatic starting on A (2 octaves)

dominanth 7th in Bb ( 2 octaves)
diminished 7th on A (2 octaves)

u see? ABRSM has alot more scales compared to Trinity. for Dominanth & Diminished, Trinity's candidate needs to prepare only 1 each whereas ABRSM's needs to prepare a total of 6, however Diminished is in 1 octave.

For Chromatic, again ABRSM's candidate needs to prepare more.

As for scales & arpeggios, to me, Trinity's is simpler & I wonder why A major 1 octave scale is in Trinity Grade 5 syllabus as I remember I did 2 octaves A major scales when I did ABRSM Grade 3.
