I don't see the problem, he's not being agressive or offensive, he's just asking about religeon. Why shouldn't we discuss it, as long as people are mature and open minded?
Incase you're wondering, I am not a Christian.

We had a perfectly good religious debate before which didn't get out of hand. I don't see why this shouldn't be a topic.

I've been a Christian.
I lost my religion in a "philosophic struggle" during my adolescence, and I know for sure that there is no way back, but I kept all my sympathy and respect for my Christian fellows and their beliefs.

Seriously, you don't turn off your brain just because you're a Christian. I know plenty of Christians who have studied science, who teach science, who are scientists. They're not mutually exclusive

Well I'm not a specialist, but there is no scientific evidence neither of the existence, nor of the non-existence of God. Maybe you should ask this question to a science professor at a Christian university.

it's an interesting question as to whether it's possible to be a good church organist/choirmaster without being a Christian or not...
myself, having been in quires since I was 8, can't say I'm particularly convinced... saying that I come from a town infiltrated by numerous religious groups ("celebrity" sects and others) and it just leaves me highly cynical and atheist!

Cynical about religion or cynical about playing the organ?

I think I sit on the fence....

..... I know there's a lot we don't understand and can't explain. I know for some it's extremely important to have some benevolent being looking out for us all, and to believe there's a good reason for the bad things that happen. But do I actually believe in something I can't see/hear/prove? I find that hard.
However, I do believe that if we all adopt christian values or their equivilent and do right by each other the world would be a better place.

I am a Christian, a sinner saved by grace alone.
On praying before exams/performances, well, our girl always go to pieces on the eve. Just before her karate exam, she cried. Just before her first competition, her exam and her recent concert, she cried on the eve of all such events due to nerves. No one, not even her teachers, put any pressure on her but she still has nerves. So I always tell her from time to time that God does NOT deliver her OUT OF her troubles or difficulties... He is no crutch! But He is her all-knowing and closest Friend! And, He is IN those trials WITH her - to help her face them and then and cope with them. Another thing I do which may seem odd to some folks here is, I tell her, I may go quite young or unexpectedly as my mum did so she must learn to rely on Him sooner or later. Didn't seem to upset her, thank God.

I follow a non-Christian path, but I was a Catholic once upon a time. I still stick up for Catholics in the face of ignorance (unfortunately common, at least where I live). And I go to an Anglican church every now and again. In the absence of a relevant temple in my part of the world, I like to have
some place that feeds my spiritual intellect, and even though I'm called to another path I still consider the teachings to be valid and relevant, even if I need to mentally alter the theology behind it

Dan Brown's books are great fun to read, but very childish.
He had a bestseller with the Da Vinci Code. I loved it.
Angels and Demons is fun, but nothing to do with christianity.
I think that was the book where some anti-matter was stolen.
The problem with Christianity is that everyone argues about it, but nobody actually reads the Gospels.
I wonder why.
Be honest. It's embarrassing isn't it? I mean, there he is, telling everyone how to behave. Respect, love, forgiveness.....
Not exactly Eastenders is it?
But at least we can be proud that we're a Christian country.
We respect other religions.
Saudi Arabia has thousands of Hindus and Chrstians, but it is still a Muslim country. They recognise their history and culture as being something worth preserving.
We have thousands of muslims and hindus, but we're still a christian country. Our history and culture is important to us. Other respect us for it.
Or do they?

I think he was, from quotes that I have read. If I remember correctly it was JSB who would write "SDG" (Soli Dei Gloria, or something - apologies for my nonexistent latin grammar!) which means something like to God only be the glory.

J.S. Bach was a very devout Protestant Christian. As in the former centuries almost everyone in Europe was Christian, so were the composers ! However, Mozart was a member of the lodge; he was at odds with the church, but he did believe in God.
Sarah, I think your nonexistent latin grammar is pretty good ! As far as I remember after 13 years, "solus" and "deus" both have irregular declensions, with dative -i in stead of -o. I'm sure I'll soon be corrected if I'm wrong.

Nearly right

. It's "Soli Deo Gloria". JSB - he wrote it at the end of all of his secular works as a means of praising god even outside is ecclesiatical works.
ACP - Deus is irregular, well remembered. It's dative is still deo but it's irregular in other ways though.

Apart form "Soli Deo Gloria", he also wrote many cantatas that are Christian related...such as "Joy of man's desire"....sp? , a really lovely piece.
