Hi does anyone know of ny youth orchestras one could join at grade 6/7 level on flute? There aren't any where i live that i could go to?

It would be more helpful if you could give us the general area of where you live, so say we don't give you orchestras in Scotland when you live in the West Country!!! What about any through your local music service?

You took the words right outta my mouth! wink.gif

If you tell us a bit more about where you live, we could try and help biggrin.gif

Not to thread-jack, but on a very similar topic, can anyone think of some nationwide youth orchestras (like the NYO I guess)? I think there's an English Schools' Orchestra or something or am I thinking of something different? huh.gif

The NYO are having an open day for players of Grade 6 and above aged between 10 & 17 in London on November 6th. I don't know what it would be like, but they describe it as :

"This is a unique chance to improve your skills, enjoy a fabulous day of music-making and to benefit from the knowledge of NYO professors, who also teach on NYO courses and regularly help the orchestra prepare for its concerts.

You will also be able to find out more about what makes the NYO ‘tick’ and how to apply to the orchestra in the future, if this is something you would be interested in. "

and its free ...

Where in East Yorkshire? If it's anywhere near the boundary with North Yorkshire then I know that there's a music centre in Scarborough. Would that be any good?

Thanks for the information on the NYO Open Day in London today. My daughter went and had a great day. About 150 + kids. We went to the 'scratch' concert at the end, Handel's Fireworks, and it was brilliant. Even had 4 Harps! What an opportunity for these kids and all FREE!!

I am glad you enjoyed it. My daughter went to it (with great trepidation) and had an excellent day. Lots of attention, lots of people (and she said such a large number of dauntingly good players - but somehow she didn't feel out of it) and an amazing concert at the end. And all free !!! Fantastic we thought.

Only bad bit was Elephant and Castle tube station being shut - some stress and bus juggling in South London!

If you want to go to the English Schools' Orchestra I think the website is http://www.esoc.gb.com/ or similar. I was in it last year, it wasn't like any orchestra I've been in before or after. It's where I met cheeble. Hope that helps.

Quite! And the weather was rotten! What's your daughters instrument? Mine is the viola, which is her third instrument so she is barely a G6. There were only 6 violas and the tutor forgot to break for lunch, they only got a ten minute lunch. Amazingly she made friends too. Thanks to this Forum for the info.

She plays the violin - was in the seconds for the concert. There were of course an awful lot of violins - they too did not get luch. The contents of an untouched lunch box was eaten on the top deck of the bus going home ....

Where in London are you? There is one in Camden/Islington/Brent called the North London Chorus which is specifically aimed for A level students, but if you go to a local Music Shop there is usually a notice board with information or the Shop assistants can direct you.
