Would a music college be more likely to choose someone who has been playing for 10 years and be diploma standard or someone playing for 4 years and grade 8+?

Surely length of play/ time taken in learning an instrument is but only ONE factor in many to be taken into account... (unless maybe you are some sort of musical genius who got to grade 8 in under one or two years at the most). Common sense would suggest that much will depend on what they see and hear on the audition day including the interview.

I agree with Tess.

I don't think they'd take how long you have been learning into account at all - it's how you perform at audition that counts. Graded exams are not a prerequisite for the conservatoires either.

The length of time playing doesn't matter. It's based on talent, ability/potential and performance at auditions as Bagpuss says.

Yes. They do not care how long an individual has been playing, only that they are good enough to enter the college.
