Thanks all for your help, I'm just trying to get an idea biggrin.gif

What instrument? For example, an elderly piano teacher told me that piano lessons are usually slightly cheaper to pay than violin?

Do you also mean per hour, as opposed to, for half hour? Most people pay for half hour lessons first till they reach grade 5/6 level or beyond?

The values in your poll have overlapping ranges, which is not a good idea, e.g. if you pay £25 the choice is ambiguous. It should be 20-24,25-29 etc.

Yes, I agree! I charge £20 an hour, and I didn't know which price-band to pick - so I haven't voted yet!

Tess - why on earth should piano lessons be cheaper than violin lessons??! A music lesson is a music lesson, as I see it!

Good question, Jo. I haven't a clue! I was so surprised so I asked him why?! His answer was - He has taught for over I don't remember how many donkey years but it was a lot, and that it has always been that way. Then when we were looking for piano and violin teachers, we found that the piano ones cost £2 cheaper than the violin ones. unsure.gif Maybe it's just a coincidence. Ridiculous, though...

That shouldn't be the case in my opinion

I agree.

Maybe it's supply and demand, and the competition is greater for piano lessons?
Tess
I was just wondering... maybe it's market forces? In economics, it's always oversupply that makes something cheap? Maybe there are more piano teachers than violin teachers in the UK? In Malaysia, Singapore and HK, that is certainly the reality. My sister told me it will cost her more for violin. According to her, it's hard to find a good violin teacher but good piano teachers are not hard to find there as the piano is the "preferred" instrument and most music teachers are more likely to be trained in it rather than on the violin.

laugh.gif Hehe, Sarah, I posted and immediately saw yours! Great minds think alike! Just kidding. biggrin.gif

Hehehe!

I do think it might well be part of the problem: after all even if piano is not your main instrument, most music colleges/unis expect a certain level of ability on the keyboard, and you only have to look at many of the teachers on this board to find people who teacher piano although it's not their speciality. It probably *isn't* fair that piano teachers might get less, but if the supply outstrips demand... unsure.gif

I used to live in Wales (I LOVE it there!) and my best friend with whom I lived, used to perform and teach both violin and piano... and they cost the same. smile.gif
