Hello, Can anyone help me? I am about to teach one of my pupils Carousel from the Spectrum book. I am not sure about how to change from 6/8 to 4/8. When changing to 4/8 do you keep the quavers as the beat ie count 123456 then 1234 or when you play in 4/8 do you or do you keep the 4/8 as to crotchets in a bar for example count 12 in 4/8 as you do in 6/8. Hope someone can help with this thanks in anticipation

I play this piece, and when doing so I dont actually worry about the time signitures, but when i count, its 123456 then 1234.

Hope this helped

Oh yeah, I couldn't coordinate my fingers to move at the same time on those different notes...I'm so glad I gave up!

Yes as people have said, when changing time signatures keep the speed of the quavers the same and just count to four instead of six. We have the evil (but very good for you) Paul Harris 'Improve Your Sightreading' books to thank for knowing that ph34r.gif laugh.gif.

I haven't played this piece but one thing that I would consider is that even though counting 123456 and then 1234 is mathematicaly accurate the feel of the beat should be considered too i.e. going from a compound duple time to a simple quadruple time signature. I would count this as 123 456 1 2 3 4 with an emphasis as the following

1-2-3 4 -5-6 1-2- 3 - 4

When I took my grade 7 exam in the Spring, I did this piece and I counted:

123123 1234

for the change from 6/8 to 4/8.

I think whatever works best for you is the key.

Good luck. I actually chose this piece for the gliss at the end. Make sure you use the soft part of your finger for the gliss otherwise you will get in all kinds of trouble.

Did you not hurt yourself doing the glissando, shelton?

Im playing this piece, i always count 123 123 12 12 as quavers for some reason! I cannot coordinate my fingers for the last few bars either! I cant rember what my teacher suggested for the gliss!!

I don't see how you can hurt yourself if you use the soft side of your finger rather than the nail side. I had no problems.
