Each has its place. The horn list has been discussing flugels as possible doubling instruments and one of the contributors (the horn professor at a university in the US) described how he was running a festival and wanted to put on a performance of the Wilder Nonet for eight horns and tuba, of which the top two parts are very high and difficult. He had only six horn players available, so he got two trumpeters to borrow flugels and play them. After the performance he decided that this scoring improved on the original.

ummm interesting, with this kind of instrument theres no right or wrong awnser on which is better - the are in many respects identical - well in the way they are played, but there is still alot of difference.

I prefer trumpet, although flugels sound great they couldnt pull off a fanfare the way a few trumpets could!

I have been reminded during Bach week that the trumpet I most like to hear is the long D with no valves. I don't mind the little finger holes they use to get the written F and F# in tune.
