I have been failed my DipABRSM in last two years,I want to take it in next year, but my teacher who is graduated from LLCM.Advice me don't take DipABRSM,Because it is very hard to pass, and even examiners ownself are not so understand the marking scheme,so,a lot of candidates failed without a reasonable reason.I am so worry about that, because I took ABRSM theory and piano certificate from grade 1 to 8.I don't wish to change, but do anyone can tell me how to be pass the DipABRSM?

Hi Agnes,
The DipABRSM, while difficult, is not impossible to pass. One would have play considerably better than needed for Grade 8, but still it's the candidate is not required to put on a truly professional performance. Compared to Grade 8, the candidate is expected to play much more musically, but still mistakes are allowed (playing a few wrong notes won't fail you, at least it didn't fail me). I have heard that the passing rate in Hong Kong (is that where you are from?) is pretty low though. Would you mind telling us which part(s) of the exam did you not receive a passing mark?

Did you fail the whole DipABRSM or just sections of it?

Hi agnescyy, this is very interesting. I know a number of local teachers who have done their grades with the ABRSM and then switched and done a Teaching Diploma with LCM. My guess is the pass rate is higher with LCM. I did my grade 8 theory with LCM and i thought it was marginally easier than the Boards. I've looked at a number of teaching diplomas, guildhall, trinity, lcm ect...i think the Board set a very high standard, that can't be faulted. Why not give it another go, if you don't pass you can always try an easier examining board.

My viva questions in DipABRSM concerning about: How do you arrive your repertore, What other works of composer, what made Bach so famous, where is the 2nd subject group of sonata, what aspects that you find this pieces so chanllenging. In fact, kind of questions are fall within the syllabus.
