Thanks again Cyrilla.
It was a long night. I was up several times and not sure if he was sleeping or comatose.
Back to the vet this morning - he rehydrated "Carlo" and gave him another shot of antibiotics and an anti-inflammatory. His temperature is down from 42.5 to 41.5 (centigrade here of course) - normal is 38.5
The problem is Carlo is a stray we took in last January - a long story but the upshot was he moved in on the night of the big storm and stayed! But he is FIV positive so has very little resistance.
At the moment he is alseep in his bed and looks a little better. We have to take him back to the vet this evening.

Thank you Cyrilla and maggiemay for your positive vibes! Carlo is a little better. But his temperature is now too low - down to 35.5. This is apparently because he hasn't eaten and is an over reaction to the anti-inflammatories. However, he has drunk a little Whiskas cat milk and a small amount of water with glucose and can now hold his head up. The vet wants to see him tomorrow morning.
Oh what a week! And it has only just begun!!

Thanks again everyone. I think we are over the hump. Carlo is now eating, drinking and walking - though very unsteadily. The vet gave him another anbtibiotic shot this morning and we have a 10 day supply of pills. Then we go back for a check up and to discuss what we can do to boost his resistance. So as long as he doesn't relapse we are on the right road.
The remaining arrrrrgh scream things for the week can be summed up in one - no two - words HUGE BACKLOG !

I've had to ring up, and they've put me on hold for twenty minutes, which I can't afford! I'm certain that there aren't THIS many people trying to contact them at 10AM! The stupid automated voice keeps telling me to go to the website instead! ARGH

Keep calm Lucky, I know its frustrating but there is no need to panic yet. The Student Finance deadline is really flexible. I know plenty of people who have applied late and still recived the loan on the first day of semester, as expected. I also know several people at the moment who just can't get the Student Finance website to let them apply... as happens every year. I'm sure you'll get it sorted.

That's comforting, then. I think I'm one of the ones who can't apply. The person on the phone promised she'd emailed my details (quoting the valid email address), but that hasn't appeared, even in my junk mail folder. The website's still not working. Also, I have now run out of credit on my phone.

I've had a really high temperature since saturday, and have also been feeling sick and very tired all the time, and it's no fun being ill!
I went into school this morning to do my french speaking exam (which went really well!

They seem to have sent out letters pretty much at random - a few friends of mine got them. When you look it up online you discover you do, indeed, need to reapply each year, but it hadn't ever been mentioned before. The deadline for those who are non-income assessed passed last week, but the one for income-assessed families hasn't yet passed.
I've got mine sorted now, I wouldn't worry your son too much about it. Tamsin mentioned that lots of people miss the deadline, and I know that half my friends haven't done it yet. Also, a flatmate said he missed the deadline by over a month last year, but still received his loan without an issue. If you still have all your information (unlike me) it should be pretty easy to do online.

Thanks, lucky. I've had a look online now and it says that if your LEA processed your first application, they will process the second, so I think they will probably write to us shortly. I seem to remember that when my daughter got loans the LEA seemed to send out forms after the deadline!
Anyway, we are income-assessed, so if it's a different deadline they probably haven't got around to us yet.

For those people trying to figure out the student loans situation, a few more bits of info. None of this is certain though, as every year of students going through at the moment has to do it differently, as the government keeps messing about with the system.
Everyone has to reapply every year, so if you haven't yet, start looking into it, but don't panic!
So far as I know, anyone can apply online.
There seems to be a real problem with website passwords this year. One person I know has asked for it to be emailed to him and recieved no such email. Its sounds, Lucky, like you might have got stuck in the same black hole.
B-M, I received my paper form from my LEA about 4-5 months ago. I would suggest trying to get your hands on one rather than hoping it'll be sent on you. It used to be you could print a PDF version off the Student Finance website, but that might have changed since the online application system was introduced. Even better is to try and find a direct contact number to your LEA staff. They tend to be much better informed than the usual telephone helpline, and should be able to get a paper form to you / suggest what you should be doing. I managed to get through to my local LEA through the county council switchboard, but its a bit of a marathon.

I've just spent the last 10 mins cuddling my recorder to warm it up, went to put it together and it turns out I'd got the wrong headjoint...oh dear... now to warm up the right one...

Now I'm a bit worried about student finance. Do you have to talk to your LEA at some point? My mum reckons they get told via the website, but I'm sure I've read in at least one place that you have to 'notify your LEA'.

Condolances to everyone suffering recent losses.
For anyone now thoroughly confused re. LEA stuff. It used to be that everyone applied for their loans through their local LEA. Over the last few years, with the new tuition fees system and lots of other reforms, things have become increasinly centralised. For those still running through old systems it tends to be you can apply either through your LEA or the centralised online system. For new students starting this year, I'm really not sure. If you've filled out an online form though, things are probably all sorted.
Its difficult to give a straight answer to any student loan related panics because the system is so complicated, and currently, is different for every year group! I can however suggest places to look for information.
