[You lot seem to have got her sussed. laugh.gif Obviously I don't want to make people unhappy, and I don't want to unsettle the house dynamics (which in a hall with 25 people is an important consideration). This is the first time I personally have had problems with her, but there have been a whole string of problems between her and other people in the house and between her and the uni - all of which have been created by her for the purpose of becoming a victim and gaining attention and sympathy (sorry if that sounds unsympathetic). People are really sick of this behaviour, which is why there is such a danger of it now destablising the whole house. I appreciate that her behaviour is likely to be caused by deeper unhappines, and that her lying and problem creating is probably a coping strategy for this. However, her approach of upsetting other people and making them unhappy in order to make herself feel better is very destructive for the rest of the house, and telling lies about people in order to turn other people against them (which she has tried several times) is frankly not acceptable.

What has really annoyed me is her lying. I have no objection to re-negotiating practice times if she wants to do that, but I DO object to her telling other people that she has told me not to play and that I have refused to listen - because this is quite simply not true. If she has a problem with my playing then she should talk to me, rather than spreading lies around the house.

Oldnotes - I'm going to see how things evolve before I make a decision on Stalybridge. smile.gif I know you've put a lot of time into the accompaniment and I would feel realy bad pulling out. However, If I haven't been able to play my flute for two weeks at that point then there is no way I'd actually be able to get through the piece.

It's only really the next two weeks which are a problem because from late July until the end of August I'll be looking after a friend's cats and guinea pig and will be able to practice there (without any close neighbours to disturb), and I'm looking to get a 1st September let for wherever I live next. It is unfortunate that the next two weeks are vital in terms of preparation for the Stalybridge concert. sad.gif

Flossie, if you only have two weeks left living with her, and if everybody else knows she's lying about a number of things including your apparent lack of cooperation, then keep practising. Put a notice on your door saying 'Please, please just knock and let me know if you've had enough - I won't mind and I don't bite!' and get on with it smile.gif
Misti
To be honest I somewhat agree with the comment that this anti-practise pest is best ignored, and you carry on doing your usual amount of practising.

Myself though, well, I'd be trying my best to arrange alternative practising facilities (friends houses? practise rooms) to ensure you're ready for the concert, and make sure you have some practise time where you don't feel anxious or self concious about what those listening think. (Its really offputting that my neighbours play throbbing loud music on the rare occasions I pick up my flute and play).

I would also consider tackling her head on, without being confrontational if possible! A comment in passing like "Someone mentioned to me that you had moaned a little about my practising. I know you might feel awkward, but I really won't mind if you come and let me know when its bothering you. Or perhaps I could try playing at a better time?" gives her another opportunity to raise the issue and if she doesn't then you've covered you back should anyone else mention it again.

("Well, I spoke to her again, and it seemed she was just having a bit of a gripe. Perhaps you caught her on a bad day..." etc)

I dunno though, I get fed up pandering to fuss making housemates. I have a system with one of mine where she's instructed to leave notes with her gripes on the dining table. This means she doesn't disturb me at 10pm when I want to be left alone, and I can filter her endless complaints into those I should do something about, those I can safely ignore, and those where I really should point out that she's being hopeless unreasonable! It seems to work quite well... blush.gif

Gas supply update - they (a multitude of men and machines) are still working 24/7 to put things right. They are still digging trenches in the road having pumped out thousands of gallons of water. The problem they are trying to solve now is how to get rid of all the gravel and silt INSIDE the gas main! Latest promise is back on by mid week, perhaps.

I wouldn't put it in quite the same way as Solari, but my sentiments are similar. You've given the girl every opportunity to tell you whether your playing bothers her, and she's said nothing, so I'd carry on as usual. There's no reason why you should take notice of a third party if you've been assured by the girl herself that you are not bothering her.

LOL.. I'm not quite as diplomatic as usual tonight, but I've met plenty of this type of person in the past. They relish stirring things and also crave attention under the pretence of being a victim sad.gif tongue.gif

Flossie: Practice all you like and blow the audience away come performance time smile.gif You won't have to put up with the aforementioned person for *that* much longer as a proportion of your life so who cares? Maybe ask again if there is a problem and see what she says face-to-face?

Flossie - don't worry about Stalybridge - your decision. I have a number of other pieces to play both solo and duets. If we don't play it there then we'll play it somewhere else, sometime. Hope it works out though.

Can his university help? There must be a good pastoral support system, and the Careers Offices are usually very clued up. Your son needs to sort out why he has failed (i.e. did he find it difficult to make himself do the work, or is it the work itself that was too hard) and what he thinks his next step should be.

If he's already had 2 years funding he would only get another 2 years maximum from the LA, so if he wants to try again for a degree at a different uni or different course he would need to fund one year himself (assuming it's a 3 year course). He might be better to cut his losses and try for a job.

The University haven't helped at all. But he's not the most proactive of people, and really doesn't ask questions. However, I've looked on the website of both the university and the students' union, and there seems nothing there of any help.

He thought he'd done well enough to pass this time (Maths degree) so this is a blow.
Misti
Hmm, there definitely should be some support from the SU on these sorts of issues. If you PM the details of his Uni I can have a poke around. I know all the welfare info is well hidden on our campus SU page.

Flossie is probably more help on this one though.

People do manage to carry on after several false starts, and this isn't very uncommon. He needs to be talking to his personal tutor, the department welfare officer, and the SU VP for education (or whatever similar roles there are at his Uni).

Best of luck sorting something satisfactory, and sympathies for your parental concern! sad.gif

I wanted to be off to the New Forest working on camp this week. (I go back and help my school three times a year, have done since I left, with a large group of ex-students including many of my friends who also return to help.) And I can't go on bivi camp this summer, because I did my knee in (ironically at the camp-fire for the year 8 camp in June tongue.gif) and I was going to go along anyway, on crutches and just be mini-bussed out to where we do stances and not do the river walks and things, but I fell down the stairs yesterday and injured myself further, and wasn't allowed to go sad.gif
SO ANGRY AT MYSELF!!!! And everyone's gone away this morning and I haven't, and I'm gutted...I Know it's only one camp, and there next one is September, and etc etc, but I hate feeling like i'm missing out on something I love...on the bright side, now the weather forecast has changed and it's chucking it down, I'm not sure I'd have been able to negotiate the field on crutches with it being that soggy anyway...but I'm still cross at myself for getting more injured the day before mad.gif mad.gif

Also, good news, my friend is getting his hip sorted smile.gif

I don't know anything about tabs, but violin and viola music is written on a normal stave with 5 lines and 4 spaces.

Yes, classical violin music is, but I've seen traditional music written out in tabs with 4 lines - one for each string, similar to 6-line guitar tabs.

I've just spent half the afternoon, and most of yesterday, trying to sort out the storm damage to my phoneline/internet. Tiscali were supposed to phone within 48hours but haven't.

Tiscali really are about as much use as a waterproof teabag. rolleyes.gif
Supposing you were trapped outside in a storm, Solari, and the only resource you carried with you was an 'uuuuuuuuuge bag of teabags. Joining these teabags together, you could fashion a primative yet effective garment to protect yourself from the elements. Now, would you rather they were waterproof, or not waterproof? I know which ones I'd choose. wink.gif

This morning was a baaaad morning.

First I had a splitting headache and was feeling dizzy, so was a few minutes late walking up to school because I wasn't sure whether to go or not.

Then as I got to school there was a dead pigeon with holes in it. I'd made friends with it since the end of last week, it was a homing pigeon which was on our school grounds for some reason, lost maybe?. We'd told teachers but they didn't care. On the third day it was there, we fed it crumbs from our lunch, and it coed at us, coming right up close. It had a yellow and green stripy band around it's leg, and so did the dead pigeon sad.gif That upset me a bit.

Then I walked into the lockers, and had managed to make up the time walking fast, so was only a minute late. A stupid teacher was standing there and said "Sorry, you're late, so can't go to your locker" because it was a minute into registration. He told me they'd sent out an email the day before, telling everyone that due to an open day or something, we were only allowed 5 minute slots to get to our locker. I didn't check my emails yesterday mad.gif I told him this, but he said "You'll have to get your things at break".

I knew my form tutor would kill me for being late, and my head was feeling horrible, I felt sick, so I rushed into the toilets and locked myself in. There's somewhere you can go, if you feel ill, but you just sit there while they ask you questions.

I sat in there for half an hour, trying to compose myself, and wondering what to do. I didn't have any of my books, so would get shouted at more by various teachers, if the teacher caught me coming out of the loos, he'd shout at me for not going to my lessons.

Eventually I trudged out of the loos with red eyes, and the teacher saw me, but left me alone wacko.gif
Luckily our first lesson was a cover lesson, so I wasn't told off for not having any of my stuff. The next lesson turned out we were in a computer room. And my friends were really nice, so it was ok.

Horrible morning though. Teachers never listen, ever, and always shout at you for stupid things.

Well, I have to hand it to you - you're pretty resourceful smile.gif

Saying that, I'd probably just let myself get drenched if I was stuck out there. I quite enjoy it actually, especially if it was a warm summer storm. Maybe I'm just weird. tongue.gif

Please don't shoot me, but I quite like my Blackberry, or my Twinkleberry as it's known laugh.gif
And I've never had any problems so by the sounds of it I'm very lucky! But I'd be very thankful if I ever did and had somebody like you to help fix it! smile.gif

You are lucky - the build quality is shocking, and the whole java thing is so buggy! I wish we hadn't been dragged into supporting them but it comes under "voice & networks" now sad.gif Oh well... Do you know all the keyboard shortcuts for stuff? smile.gif

I doubt it, I know how to type my PIN thingy into a text, and that's about it. Oh and the whole, space twice and a full stop appears! I presume this means there are a lot more? Will they make my life easier or more likely to kill it?! haha laugh.gif

Perfect start to the day.... Being told I'm stupid and a liar by my mother. I was already not looking forward to today and now I'm going to end up going to work with bloodshot eyes dreading coming home. And people there will be snappy and I'll be meant to deal with it in a normal, professional manner but I feel so rotten now that it'll be impossible. I just want to hide. sad.gif
