For the past six weeks, I have had some hearing loss in my right ear. One GP said it was a "natural occurrence" and would right itself; GP no.2 (after 10 days of no improvement) says I have a "swollen external ear canal" and prescribed Otomise ear spray. This didn't help, and in fact caused the loss to worsen; GP no3 (after a week) says my ear "is full of wax" and needs syringing. Off I go to the nurse today...only to be told there is not a single bit of wax in the ear!!! unsure.gif unsure.gif Off she goes to get GP no.4 who confirms no wax but "some swelling". I now have Locorten Vioform ear drops to try.

Sorry to sound off like this (and I do have the utmost respect for Doctors! xx) but it's a right nuisance, and will be very uncomfortable for Leeds in a couple of weeks, if these other drops don't work.... sad.gif

I hope yo get better soon too!

I know the feeling though! My mum burst both my ear drums when cleaning them out when I was little with a cue tip. It was very painful and couldn't hear for a couple of weeks!

DC, shouldn't you be throwing a few toys out of the pram and demanding an immediate referral to an ENT specialist?

Yes...tried that..they want to see if the swelling will make a difference once it's gone down, before making any referrals. I have told them I will be back and expecting a referral if these new drops don't help. ph34r.gif

Sorry to hear about your problem. I had an ear infection once and it was excruciatingly painful. How long have you to take the drops for before knowing if they work?
DaisyChain
Thanks sweet. I have a week, but the doc says I should "Notice a difference" within 4-5 days. I have set a target of Wednesday, because the week after that we will be coming up to Leeds! I want to get it sorted before then. unsure.gif

But, I have had an ARGH movement today. I'm fed up with school, how, increasing it homogenises everyone and is so impersonal.

Apparently, I am in school to work, and you'd think the students' interests would be heart.

Maybe not though, today was one of many days in the past few weeks, where the day has been pointless.

History (p1) - You'd think that with the exam 3 weeks today, we'd be doing lots of work in class. Wrong! Spent an hour playing games (literally - taboo, a quiz we'd done before, making strories). Even when we protest, he doesn't take any notice.

History (p2) - Sort of pointless. Got some essays back. But then we just planned another essay - we could have done it at home.

Tutor time - Tutor adament that we had to come into school no matter how "pointless" we deem it is. Our school refuses to give us study leave, apparently we'll all waste it, but I get so much more done when I'm at home.

Free - in nosiy library

Music - Supposed to be my lesson (aural). Instead year 12 came in. Went over a listening paper (AS), but then she realised the CD had a crack in it. Took ages to look for a new CD, and to find another year's paper etc.

Sociology - As usual, our Friday pub quiz (!), on "famous" celebrities. Had some work to do, but because of the pub quiz it was second priority.

But today, I got homework in every lesson. Stuff like writing essays, and finishing A2 2 part. I would have much rather just known what the work was and revised at home. I would have got loads more done, and even done some of the homework. If we miss a lesson without a good reason (surely needing 3 As and wanting to revise is a valid reason) we get put down as truanting which has serious consequences.

GAH.

I have C1 and C2 on Monday, and I haven't finished all the things on the syllabus!!!! I could see it happpening from the beginning, as I only have 3 lessons a week whereas the group has 4 (I have maths on my own because it clashed with history). I supposedly finished the syllabus last week, but we hadn't looked at any of the 'problem' questions that actually turn up on the paper... So I spent yesterday lunchtime with another maths teacher trying to do the bits I hadn't learnt, and today I was supposed to have another lesson BUT someone else decided to come along... So my teacher spent most of the lesson explaining basic things like Pythagoras to her (she's one of the less able people doing maths). So I now have no chance to see a maths teacher before my exam, and I'm panicking... sad.gif sad.gif sad.gif

Do you have a textbook you can use?

I'm presuming you're doing Edexcel as my C2 is on Monday too...the text book is excellent, and when our teacher was away most of us had to self teach the binomial and coordinate geometry chapters.
BBTOTW
Thanks, I'm going to try and ring my further maths teacher tomorrow to see if she can explain things... smile.gif

BBTOTW I go to normal group maths lessons, and we were basically sent away yesterday for study leave and told that we "probably don't need to know about logs or the trapezium rule" and so not to worry about them... those things have come up on... oh just about every practice paper I've tried...

I'm learning it myself now..
It sucks doesn't it?

Ps My C1 and C2 exams are Monday too.. with AQA
crazy_purple_piano_freak
Well best of luck guys. smile.gif

At my school they just throw past papers at us and make us panic. It all worked out for my C2 but my S1 is less than impressive. *scowl*

With c2 you'll find that a lot of the same types of question come up on every paper - there's usually just a little trick you have to learn and then it'll be the same for all the papers. smile.gif

Yep, it's Edexcel. I'm fine on most of it, but the Trig chapters are HORRIBLE and I can't get my head around any of it... and I have a grand total of 3 past papers...

lucky045, logs are fine if you learn all the rules in the book - they don't expect you to do any clever maths smile.gif And the trapezium rule is just knowing what the formula means, which I presume you know - you'll be fine smile.gif
crazy_purple_piano_freak
What don't you understand about trig? I'm okay with that...is it the triangle stuff or the "simple equations" chapter with the quadrants?
BBTOTW

It's when you get equations like f(x) = y = 1-2Sin(px-q) or something and they give you a graph and some points, and you have to work out p and q and then work out the points of inflection.... aargh
crazy_purple_piano_freak
*blinks*

I swear we never have to do that in past papers...
lucky045
Thank Goodness for that! I can learn the rules by rote and just practise the sort of questions they come up in usually...

and the trapezium rule has a formula I can memorise too I think (I hope.)

Trig rules are ok to learn because if you are struggling to remember you can work them out through GCSE trig - it takes a while but it's doable...
Like... SOH CAH TOA... Tan = O/A => O/H/A/H then the two hypotenuse cancel out and you have Sin/Cos = Tan...
So I like those.. and don't worry, you have the whole weekend to leanr and practise - you probably know more than you think..

your practice papers look very complicated... are you doing AS?

wacko.gif Oh my gosh, that sounds so confusing! Poor you!
BBTOTW
.....
It was in the book (chapter 10) in the mixed exercises with the E symbol, so I assume it came from a past paper...
crazy_purple_piano_freak
...for quadrants to remember where sin/cos/tan are positive, I always remember what someone in U6 told me... "### And The City"

LOL.

Edit: It probably did, but remember that those examples are pretty old. The (E) questions in mixed exercises are always horribly hard.

Do you have access to actual past papers? I've got all the ones from June 04 onwards I think, and have done them all. Nothing like that has ever come up. smile.gif
lucky045
I hope to God that is unique to edexel... looks like you just stumbled over an inordinately hard question to me!
BBTOTW
I hope so too... If that turns up in the paper you might hear a very loud scream... Also I can't trig questions in radians... especially when they say 'give your answer in radians'.... sad.gif sad.gif
lucky045
Do you have a graphical calculator? If so just go to shift, set up and change your settings to radians (but remember to change it back afterwards!)
BBTOTW
I only have a normal calculator (one I've had since year 7)... it can cope with radians, but it doesn't give the answer in terms of pi, which really sucks because that's what they usually want in the exams!!!!
crazy_purple_piano_freak

OMG that took me AGES to figure out. *hugs*

You can always do it all in degrees and convert it to radians if you find it easier.

Alternatively just remember that pi=180 degrees and 2pi is 360. Then do stuff like you normally would. smile.gif

I need to buy myself a calculator battery tomorrow. I've had this calc since year 7 and I no longer trust it. ph34r.gif laugh.gif

lucky045
My year seven calculator has all the buttons rubbed down so you can hardly use it...

Without my graphical one I'd be useless.... but I don't know how to get it to convert things into terms of pi either!

Oh dear.
crazy_purple_piano_freak
to convert things from degrees to pi...

e.g. if you have 60 degrees, in radians that would simply be 60pi/180 smile.gif just multiply by pi and divide by 180
BBTOTW
Aaaaarghhhhhh
I also have M1 and M2 this year, and I can't do most things on M2..... I need all As and my school discourages resits so it's kind of my last chance...
lucky045
Oh thanks!

So radians... is (degrees x pi) / 180..

Agh everything makes more sense now.
