Thank you both. We've had cats ever since we've been married, and we decided that when this one died we wouldn't have any more as we go away quite a bit. So she was the last - poor old thing, she was in a terrible state when I took her in this morning - and only yesterday she was pottering around as usual. She went very quietly thank goodness.

I am so terribly sorry. Our family have had our two since just after we were married too and they are both 14. This time last week Plato was on a drip and we were worried he was developing ketoacidosis after a tummy bug and urinary tract infection, then to cap it all Gandalf caught the tummy bug. Both cats are well now, but I can't help thinking there by the grace of God...

No wonder you are upset.

thereThere.gif

They really worm there way into your affections. I'm glad it was quick, yet small consolation.

So sorry to hear about your cat jm-hamilton - I hope you might take some comfort in that your cat had a wonderfully long life with you and she'll have given you a lifetime of memories as her legacy.
miffy
We lost the 2 cats we'd had since we were first married last year within a few weeks of eachother. They are side by side in the garden with a piece of slate from Wales for the black one and a piece of chalk from Dover for the White one, and some miniature colourful flowers. I sit on my bench next to them to read my book and feel comforted.
I am sorry sad.gif

Fairly minor, but annoying one - managed to scratch my eye on my OH's chin yesterday morning.

How dim is that- he stretched just as I reached across to find my phone!

Plus the minor injuries unit didn't use any local when they stained it so it really hurt and didn't stop hurting (despite painkillers) until A&E (where i'd been told to go if it didn't stop hurting) stained it with local and it instantly stopped being sore and managed to settle down massively. Still not perfect, but miles better.

I did have plans involving driving today, but had to cancel, and they can't be rearranged for ages.

Much sympathy. It doesn't matter how these things are done, they hurt a lot just the same. When my son was about 2 he managed to get his finger behind my glasses and scratched the front of my eye. Hurt an awful lot, and I had to go to the docs.

Hope it's on the mend now. smile.gif

Aaargh just had the whole 'you need to get a job soon' talk from my parents - they clearly have no idea what's going on in my head right now, but I know what they're like and if I try to tell them they'll just tell me to either grow up, accept this as a fact of life, or both - not particularly useful advice in my current emotional state sad.gif

So sorry to hear your sad news jm-hamilton. I 'wept buckets' over my previous 2 cats (the first one was only 2 years old) and can understand how you must feel. Our current 'little girl' is nearly 15 now (been with me 10 years) and, although she seems fit and well, I know from experience how suddenly and rapidly cats can decline.

Sending you my condolences and warmest wishes,

Our singing teacher is going back to Vienna to relaunch his operatic career in 5 or 6 weeks, he's just told me. I want to cry even though I'm really happy for him. My lessons are the high point of my week. I don't want another teacher, I don't think anyone else here is as good as him, and this means I'll have to wait until his holidays for lessons sad.gif

QUOTE(tamsin @ Aug 10 2011, 06:01 PM) *

Hmm, the way I would explain is that Tamville is a country with ?10 in the bank. But I want to spend ?15 on welfare music schemes. So I create 5 bonds of value ?1. These are IOUs which I 'sell' to Forumville and other 'ville's. These 'villes' see that I have ?10, so they think I can repay. The IOUs have no intrinsic value, and I have to pay interest on them. I then spend all ?15.

At some point in the future I have to pay back the ?5 I borrowed (or buy back the debts I sold), I also have to repay the interest (say, an additional ?1). But all my money is gone, so I borrow ?6, in order to clear the existing ?5 debt. Because I have borrowed money in the past, people are happy to lend to me, because they feel confident they'll get it back: I've always repayed my debts in the past. At some point in the future, though I will have to repay ?6 plus interest ... and I'll have to borrow that money too.

Now consider, that Forumville and the other 'villes' are probably also in debt too. They probably borrowed the ?5 that they lent Tamville from someone else. The someone else they borrowed the money from, most likely borrowed that from yetanotherperson. The whole system then depends on everyone passing around IOUs, without the material value of the IOUs being redeemed (because no-one actually has all the money being lent in an account somewhere: Each 'ville' has just enough to reassure people that they can repay their debts). Hence, there is more debt (IOUs) being passed around the system than ever existed in actual currency. The only way for it to vanish is for it to be inflated away... which goes someway to explain why prices are rising so much at the moment.

The middle segment of this week's More or Less has a go at explaining exactly who national debt is owed to: http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b0132pk7

We've managed to buy ourselves a DVD player/combi recorder with HDD + freeview tuner that won't let you record one channel and watch another.
So as soon as the (rubbishy) film began at 9p.m it clicked off the Film music prom and started recording and showing Shrooms. Aaargh! We couldn't stop it, cancel it or do anything with it apart from go over to terrestrial tv, which was also showing rubbish.

I can't believe that in the 21st century we have a machine that is worse than the old video recorder we had in the 1980s.

I missed last weekend's Ravel prom for the same reason but we presumed my husband had set it up wrongly - now, reading reviews of the machine it seems not.

I recommend those litter pickers for when you have a bad back. The whole family laughed at me when I bought one, but it's absolutely brilliant, especially when you get in a bit of a steam (and nicely tense mad.gif ) when you're clearing up offspring's untidiness. Now I have the last laugh. I'm extremely adept at picking up the smallest objects.

Well...yes, I've been in Leicester for the past week, ensconced on the British Kodaly Academy's Summer School - totally institutionalised as all the days were very full-on and I wasn't able to connect to the internet. We neard from others about the rioting...thank you to all the forum people, past and present, who texted me to see if Bagpuss and I were all right.

Bag was very shocked, especially when evacuated from Croydon - and also to see the devastation so near to our much-loved old school sad.gif .

On other matters - I'm so sorry to see that Solari has de-registered sad.gif sad.gif sad.gif . I loved his sense of humour and he was incredibly kind and helpful to me on more than one occasion when I had computer problems. The forum will be a poorer place without you, Sol.

Also very sorry to hear of jm-hamilton's cat sad.gif . I lost my nearly-19-year-old cat too, about a month ago now - so I totally understand your sadness. Also particularly sad that you're not able to have another cat - I'm starting to think about visits to Cats Protection...

My own ARGH is developing a really horrible leg/hip pain last Tuesday. It isn't getting any better, is affecting my sleep (I can only sleep on one side), walking is horribly painful and I can't get to my wonderful osteopath until at least next Friday (I have to go to Cheltenham on Monday to teach on the ESTA course for four days). Sorry to read about your girls. One of our chickens is a little under the weather. How old is your "old" hen?
Cyrilla
My dad recently lost Daisy Chicken who was, we think, in her 9th year...

sad.gif
Banjogirl
My old hen is only about two and a half but she has been the most useless hen ever. We got her when she was a bit over one (ex-commercial free range hybrid) and she laid for a coupld of months until we got our Polish hens last summer. She took and instant dislike to them and hasn't laid an egg since! Not only that but she's horrible to the other hens. However, I do feel very sorry for her sitting miserably in the hen house. I had to bath her last night which she usually doesn't mind (she's prone to getting a dirty behind) but she was very sad afterwards and took herself inside and hasn't come out since. I'll see if i can tempt her with a treat, if she's still with us.

9th year! That's pretty good going for a hen. Our hybrids never last all that long as they get worn out laying so many eggs, but 9 is good even for a pure breed.

I had a friend with a very old hen who had to rehome it when she moved. Within two weeks she had been got by a fox and my poor friend was devastated.
Banjogirl
She's come out and is eating, looking quite perky. Maybe there's hope for the old girl yet. I hope she's not going to be one of those that hang on and hang on though...

Red mite don't like the steamer. Hooray biggrin.gif
sbhoa
AGH! I must have the narrowest broadband on the planet.....
morceau
Banjogirl - re the red mite. I have some stuff called Barrier Blow-fly Repel (I get it from the feed merchants). Its made from essential oils and is absolutely amazing for dealing with any kind of infestation. I DO NOT use it on the hens themselves, but I spritz it on the ends of the perches and any nooks and crannys where red-mite can get. The smell of it is quite overpowering, so I make sure I do it first thing and then leave the shed open to air all day.

However, I think the steamer is a great idea. I would use that if I had power near enough to the shed.

I've had chickens live to 11years!! That was a pure-breed, but some of my hybrids have been 9 and 10.
Banjogirl
Well, the steaming's done. A lot of the mites weren't killed, but they came scuttling out and I was able to mash them up. I got covered in them and have had to have yet another shower. I've never been so clean! Thanks for the tip about the repellent. I was wondering what's best to get. I have the Barrier louse repellent, which I put in the dust bath and then the hens won't go in it, but what you've got sounds stronger. My next step is a sulphur candle. My girls aren't getting back in their house until I'm sure it's clean!
