Fingers crossed it's what he needs to sort himself out. Personally, I think he needs a hobby that isn't going down the pub ... and to take some responsibility and get a job to pay for it. He's 60 though, so whilst it'd be great if he sorts himself out I'm not quite sure how he will do this.
I asked him what he is interested in (because honestly, I don't have a clue!) which came down to riding motorbikes which he can't do due to hip problems and going to the pub / drinking at home. Somehow he's managed to run up personal debts of over ?20,000 which he has spent on nothing useful, either.
My mum works six days a week so can't be there to watch him 24/7!
You don't have to drink every time you go to a pub/bar. Much as I like a beer, I probably end up having cola more often. And I visit pubs/bars quite a lot : the food in many of them is far better than what you can get in fast food places
