Are you sure that Mikrosoft has this point of view? I doubt. The permisson concept of the windows versions since Vista are suspect to me.

I am sure there is a logic to it somewhere, but I cannot seem to fathom it out. Maybe I don't have a binary brain. smile.gif

For example; does 'Everybody' actually mean 'anyone', or just everybody with a user account? unsure.gif

I had similar problems when setting up Windows 2003 back in the dark ages. Didn't matter what I did, we could open files on the server, but could not save or edit them, or create new ones. In the end I re-formatted each of the disk arrays and restored everything from tape. It worked perfectly then. wacko.gif

I prefere not to think about the permission system on Windows 2003 Server and I am happy to have nothing to do with it.
But soon I will have to get into the world of SAP, waiting for the things I will have to cope with there.

QUOTE(Misti @ Feb 6 2012, 07:01 PM) *

Meh, so I speak to my father today while at work, at which point he tells me that my mother is in hospital, pretty ill. Not sure when he was planning to tell me this... apparently he didn't want me to worry!

Well of course, I promptly get very worried, end up in tears in the middle of the nice big open plan office, dramatically sobbing all over one of my colleagues. (Perhaps my father was very astute?!) One of them then drives me home, as he didn't think I was safe to drive (frankly, I probably wasn't).

Its just the shock. From what my father says, it isn't anything very very seriously wrong, and my mother should be able to go home to recover this evening. I just wish there was something I could do, which didn't involve being a melodramatic, overreacting twit. Not only am I worried about my mother, (despite best attempts to keep things in perspective), I'm also rather embaressed about going to pieces at work...

sad.gif

I hope she makes a quick recovery. Don't worry about appearing melodramatic - people will just think you human! I got some very, very bad news at work once and could barely speak without crying. I think that was far more understandable than pretending nothing had happened.
Misti
As an update, my mother is out of hospital - sounds like death on the phone, but at least she was well enough to talk to me. Hoping for a speedy recovery - and no more scares for a very long time!! smile.gif

(And I'm now away on a business trip, so won't have to spend the rest of the week getting anxious enquiries from my very nice colleagues! biggrin.gif They were all lovely, as you all predicted, but the fuss can be awkward after a while. I find it really disconcerting when everyone is tiptoe-ing around me...!)

My birthday is on Tuesday. This means it is a manky day working at the west London site, being a Tuesday. Oh well, never mind.
Oh we'll put in a 2-3pm team meeting - no problem.
And now some 3-4pm training - OK, but it darn well better not over-run, or if it does, I'm out of there at 4pm on the dot.
And then another meeting has just gone in noon-2pm.

So now not only do I have a full on day which won't let me leave until at least 4pm (I usually sneak out about 10 to 4, any head start on the journey is welcome), I now can't even get any lunch due to the noon-2pm meeting. Well, I can get a baguette from the deli bar in the morning, but I can't have a warm lunch from the proper canteen sad.gif Which would be bad enough any day, but it's my birthday, I shoudl have lovely lunch and cake sad.gif Maybe I'll just move my birthday to another day...

And work is incredibly busy at the moment anyway. I might just have enough time to do everything on my list if any one big thing was taken away, but that doesn't look like that is going to happen any time soon sad.gif It looks like I have two full time tasks plus any extra little ones that crop up to do, all at once...and spending the most part of a day in meetings isn't going t help.

On top of which, this morning I managed to inadvertantly remove the door from our airing cupboard - it's a bifold door and it keeps coming off its runner, in trying to put it firmly back on its runner I lifted it a bit too mcuh and lifted the whole thing off laugh.gif blush.gif ohmy.gif

AND on top of all that, my computer at home is broken (switches itself off - it did it a couple of times of the least week or so, but yesterday it did it several times. it now switches on long enough to get me to enter my password, if I'm lucky, and then just switches itself off - reckon it must be the power supply, but don't know when I'm going to get round to taking the thing apart to look...any hardware gurus out there got any advice?)

I have occasional problems with my laptop power supply. Sometimes , even if plugged into mains, it seems to run from battery, and when battery expires , it switches off. If yours is a laptop, try removing the battery, so it has to run form mains. Then when you are not using it, put the battery back in and recharge (without using it)

Not having a good day. Arrived in Lincoln with a seriously flat tyre - and the nearest breakdown van was in Barnsley! He then had to stay in Lincoln for the day as the local driver had had an accident and written off his van... I hope a 20 mile drive on a flat tyre won't have done *too* much damage...

Good idea, but this is a desktop. First step will be just de-casing it and sucking all the dust out, I'm hoping it's jsut the fan onthe power supply being blocked by something (this makes my house sound so attractively dusty...!)

All my appointments for this afternoon bar 2 have cancelled.
The first one of these failed to show up. Yesterday I left a message on the second patient's ansafone asking him to come at 2. 15 instead of 3.45.

No sign of him as yet.

Called him again and still only the ansafone.

Will have to wait until 20 mins after his original appointment time of 3.45 before I can assume he isn't coming.

ARGH! sad.gif sad.gif

Just had the exam appointments through for Son No.1 and 2. We asked for week 4 and got the second day of week 1 - with the net result that (owing to half term and then a school residential visit), Son No.2 won't actually have another clari lesson until after his exam (and he is distinctly unnerved by that fact).

All I need now is for my Gr 5 piano to be on the same day (we actually asked for week 1 for that exam so that I could get it out of the way without risking a clash with the Sons' exams).... ph34r.gif

The only bright spot is that the accompanist can make the exam date, despite it being far earlier than anticipated. If he hadn't been able to, I think I would have been looking for a bus to jump under!

To add insult to injury, got home and house was cold (13C). Heating had failed to come on because the burner had a "lock out". I'd flipped it to "timed" this morning from "all day" as it was a normal day today (yesterday I was home for part of the day). This evidently caused the lock out to engage, so heating had not come on at 4.30 the way it ought to have done. IPB Image

I am responsible for the students in our department who do a year in an English university with Erasmus. I had my own application form that they had to fill in and a list of supporting documents and they gave me a paper copy of everything by a fixed date. I could then read them and class them (manually in a file) according to the selection policy we have devised.

This year the International Relations office decided that they would "simplify" things and students would apply online. I was asked what information I needed (and told them) and was told that the International Relations would collect all the applications and then hand them over to me.

Problem N? 1: I have never seen the student application form because you need a student number to log in on-line and see it. I have had numerous e-mails from students saying they don't understand X Y or Z on this form and I don't know what they mean because I have never seen it.

Problem N?2: I have just been sent an electronic list of the names of students who have applied for "my" destinations and a link to a website which enables me to select my candidates from an alphabetical list of over 500 students who have applied for all the different destinations. I can then download their application form and if I want a paper copy, print it out myself. My form was a single page and had 3 supporting documents and the students gave them to me in paper form. The new form is 5 pages long and has 6 supporting documents. I usually have around 50 applications so if I print them all out it's going to cost me a fortune in ink and paper, not to mention the time it will take to print it out mad.gif .

Problem N?3: Having looked at (but not printed out) one of the applications, the new form doesn't have any of the vital information that I specifically asked for which we need for our selection process mad.gif

Tenor Viol
Annual review time which gives you a grade, your salary increment (including cost of living increase) and "bonus" (abominations). Zero for both. Next time I'm asked to attend a meeting in London at 9am requiring me to get up at 4.30, they answer will not be "Yes". Given inflation and my pension contributions will increae again in April, that amounts to 6% - 7% pay cut.

Nothing really, really exciting. And the worst thing is they had hardly anything on my wishlist (such as Rubbra) and I STILL spent loads of money.

The most expensive thing was buying a flexible combo of fun pieces for an informal quartet we are about to start (flute, oboe, cello, piano - possibly sometimes supplemented by a second flute or clarinet). Plus a Vivaldi Concerto in G minor (RV 103) which is for flute, oboe, bassoon and keyboard, or for 2 violins, cello and keyboard, so it should work for our combo. And a Quantz Sonata.

I did put back three things.

A couple of things were for other people.

I bought the Rubbra really cheaply on ebay when I first started (on the theory that I would be good enough to play it one day). I took it into my lesson a couple of months ago with an assortment of pieces so that my teacher could chose something for me to learn. It turned out he had never heard of it - he got quite excited about it and wrote down the references so that he could go and order himself a copy smile.gif

Sounds as bad as me going to early music events where there are vendors selling their wares. Trouble is no "normal" music shop stock stuff like viol consort music, so you tend to go mad when the opportunity arises. The problem is, something like the Byrd Fantasias are about GBP40 so two or three items gets very expensive very quickly.... unsure.gif

Driving home from Stone this afternoon with cello in car (see adjustments thread on Strings). I'm about 6 miles from home on A525 (how that road is designated an A road beats me - there are bigger country lanes round here). Good visability, I'm not going that fast - about 35 (national speed limit road, but I've just come out of a couple of bends, it's fairly straight in front of me).

There is a large pub on LHS (which is very good). Plenty of visability. Car starts to pull out to turn right: there is NO WAY I can possibly stop in the available time. I hit the horn and I jam the anchors on, ABS kicks in, and I swerve onto wrong side of road (thank heavens nothing was coming other way). Car stutters to a halt just past the car park entrance (i.e. I could not possibly have stopped short of hitting her). She just carries on and drives off without a bye or leave. I'm not sure she even saw me.

If I had not had ABS and swerved onto wrong side of road, I would have hit straight into the side of her car at about 20 mph probably.

I was a twitching wreck wacko.gif

And good to hear nothing serious happend to you Tenor Viol.

I have a minor aaaagh. The person I have to share the office with seems to have never heard about manners. Someone entered our office and asked for the computer magazine and he immediatly started to bawl against the other person.
I couldn't stand this and left the room. huh.gif

I have a Special Visit booked for next week (first time I've done this!) and had requested a morning slot. As I'd heard no different, I assumed that's what I'd got. This morning I had a call from the examiner saying that the exams are in the afternoon...

Now to contact all the candidates and re-organise all the timetable - and I thought I'd done so well in getting the information out in good time...

I really want to scream. I have had enough of interviews. I hate them - if it wasn't for the fact I really need a job, I would just give up right now.

Was offered an interview this week for a really great job. Was really excited and doing my prep all ready for the interview and I've just received an email to say it's been cancelled.

All I want is a job and I keep being mucked about and treated like rubbish - I already feel like rubbish and now they just pile in to kick me while I'm down.

I shall go and have a good cry, pick myself up and then start this stupid charade all over again.

Aw, that's tough, Blackbird. Has it been cancelled permanently, or just deferred? Hope you find something you like soon. The perfect job is out there somewhere.

Really understand, Blackbird. Hang in there - when it is absolutely right, it WILL happen for you.

Last month I was offered a cracking job over the phone - I was SOOOO excited, spent ages getting all me quallies photocopied/latest CV/CRB etc. together...only to be told the following day that there had "been a mistake" and there was "no job to offer". AND the person who told me this had the CHEEK to LAUGH! Glad she found it funny.

Hmm...cracking job or not, I wouldn't want to be working for a company like that...

Fingers crossed for you, Blackbird smile.gif

Sorry to hear that. It's an employer's market at the moment and there are those who abuse that position, both to those seeking employment and to those employed.

Hopefully, you will get through this IPB Image
