Hello All!
Just wondering if I should play the repeats or not...I know the general rule is to not play them but the piece seems better with them?

Only da capos for exams. Other repeats are not required.

Hey, I played this piece! Do you like it? I did, though I kept on tripping over when I tried to get it up to full speed.
Anyway, I didn't do the repeats in the exam.

No, no repeats in the exam - Tarantelle is long enough and repetitive enough, even if it is fast!
How's the theory, Hulk?

Thanks for the clarification everyone!
Yes I really like it anakrron, just started to play it so it's not up to full speed yet!
Theory's coming along nicely noodle! I will be concentrating a lot more on theory because I can't do any more exams until I've did grade 5 theory, but that doesn't bother me...I really enjoy theory!

I am doing this piece for my exam on Friday next - it is marked at a breakneck speed of 160 - I can play it at around 140, and luckily the notes say 132 -144 is ok for the exam.

Nov 27 2005, 06:01 PM
Yeah, I think I only played it around 130-140 in my exam. The examiner commented that it was rather slower than the marked tempo, but I still got 27 for it.

Lovely piece La Tarentelle.
Friend of mine is doing this REALLY quickly, with repeats, and barely reaches a minute! Very fast!

But as mentioned, I agree with no repeats in the exam...unless they are REALLY short repeats? Like only 4 bar repeats would be needed in ANY piece?

Why on earth are they doing it that quickly? To sound impressive?

Well, isn't a Tarantelle supposed to be a really, really, really fast dance so that you can cure the bite of a snake, or something similar? I guess it should go as fast as possible while still sounding good.

Oh Gawd...Burgmuller. This was a piece that has been set for G4 in the past. Burg's MM speeds are rather over the top...see Easier Piano pieces- Publisher:Associated Board.
But hey! Where would us teachers be without him?
Fancy thinking it is about a snake. The title gives it away. It's about dancing/sweating out a spider's bite. If I was bitten by a spider,I wouldn't be playing a piece of music...
I-Looney...read the Rules and regs...no repeats,...and that includes 4 bars..only Da Capos...I reckon your friend is really You! Good Luck sitting your G5.

There is no way anyone could play that with repeats in under a minute! That would mean playing it twice. Do you think we're that gullible?
Hulk
Nov 28 2005, 10:24 PM
Semele, believe it or not that's a common misconception about the spider bite, it says on the notes in the ABRSM Grade 5 book that,
"'La Tarentelle' is a tarentella, a folk dance from southern Italy whose name is derived from the town of Taranto (not from the tarantula as was formerly believed)." (I thought it was about a spider as well)
It also mentions the composer's metronome marks often seem to be rather excessive...stating the obvious...

Yep...it's a dance that takes its name from the sourthern Italian seaport of Taranto....the bite is harmless, but did you know once gripped in it's jaws,it never lets go.

Well if someone practises with repeats doesn't mean one will do it in the exam does it?

Absolutely NO REPEATS!! What part of 'no repeats' do you not understand?
No! So what about a recording of your extra fast friend for the Forum users website? If he/she's that good I'm sure he/she won't mind.

Probably a month to learn each note for his friend...cough him!
