I saw this story on the Times website.

http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,2-1897087,00.html

Living in Italy, I try to keep up with the news back home as well as I can, but it's not always easy.

As far as I know from other websites, there is anger, not only because of the actual case, but because it hasn't been mentioned on BBC, ITV news etc.

Is this true. This is disgusting rascism. All rascism is bad. To discriminate against someone because of their religious beliefs is outrageous.

i won't voice my feelings except to ask...never mind. I'll get done for being racist.

two things strike me about the article:

one is there isn't a great deal of detail about what happened (perhaps partly because it settled out of court).

the other is that whatever the circumstances, which we aren't told, this doctor won his case and received an undisclosed award of damages, so that at least to that extent the law did support him.

I hope this article won't prompt some kind of revolt against muslim doctors in the way there seems to be increasing criticism of doctors working in our hospitals who have been imported from overseas. I am very grateful to the "imported" orthopaedic surgeon who set my daughter's arm perfectly last summer after a horribly displaced fracture. My only qualms were over the effect such importation is having on the countries these doctors are being imported from.

I think few people on this forum, in our government, or in the national health service would defend the religiously intolerant attitude from fellow doctors which the article hints at, but to suggest such intolerance is a widespread characteristic of Muslim doctors and not Christian doctors would require substantially more proof than this single unspecific article provides.

Actually I'm suprised this wasn't picked up by the Daily Mail it is just the sort of jingoism they love to print.

Arrggghhh I hate the Daily Mail! My Mum buys it but I can never understand why!! As an NHS worker some of the stuff they print drives me nuts..then we get people asking stupid questions and having needless fears when they come into hospital.

Oh I love it. The closest thing to a university ragmag!

I grew up with this paper and was quite surprised when I left home to find things weren't quite as the Daily Mail had led me to expect. ohmy.gif

Of course, it's rubbish. I reckon the reason why is that it's always been a very pretentious paper. Whereas papers like the Sun, Star etc don't pretend to be anything other than a cheap tabloid, the Daily Mail has always worked hard at it's image as a 'quality' broadsheet. Thus people tend to believe a lot of the trash they read.

It's actually extremely hard to find a good source of news these days. The BBC is controlled by left wing, P.C. apologists, ITV and Sky only care about their revenue, newspaper editors have to increase sales etc.

What's going to sell more papers? A well-balanced story about climate change or a Dirty old man in Hendon?

As for the Daily Mail, the pages make excellent firelighters! biggrin.gif

Firstly I dont believe it is generally the case that christain doctors suffer in the NHS I know 30-40 who seem to be very happy. I have heard of more instances of the problems being the other way again very rarely in terms of the profession more from patiants (sp?) to doctors.

Secondly reporting on such a issue in modern day britain could become very hard because of the recently introduced Incitment laws...... That is probably why the article kept to facts and not whats was sadi/do or why...

Please excuse spelling I cant see my words very well today...

i spose this thred might as well be closed.

When I hear stories like that, I really think there's something we're not being told. I don't think for one second that this has anything to do with the seikhs. Most likely, it's an overzealous headteacher trying to score brownie points with the LEA.

I used to listen to 3 counties radio when I lived in Herts and there was an outcry when the council in Luton tried to change Christmas to Winter Festival (or something like that).

The phone in radio programme was swamped with angry callers. Guess who the angry callers were? Asian people who were sick to death of being patronised by stupid, P.C. councillors who seemed to think that Christmas could be offensive to non-christians. I never met a single non-christian who didn't respect the christian traditions.

You'd be surprised how much trouble is caused, not by minorities, but by over enthusiastic 'do-gooders' who think they know what's best for everyone.

I heard this story on the news, and it said the Sikhs were allowed to wear bangles for religious purposes, however another girl was not allowed to wear a crucifix because the school in that particular case considered she was wearing it as a piece jewellery and not for religious purposes. Presumably the girl in question is not a practising christian, for all we know the crucifix could be covered in diamante.

I never realised that a teaching diploma made one so wise!

So all Sikh kids are really religious?

When will people realise that it is the so called 'professionals' who make these sort of silly decisions, that are actually causing a lot of the problems.

You cannot treat one side differently. There has to be fairness.

Either you ban all forms of religious garments/jewellery, OR you allow them all.

But banning one, while allowing another is simply stirring the flames.

Schools don't take decisions. They're bricks and mortar. Humans take decisions. Men and women. However, pseudo intellectuals, particularly in the public sector, have the envious opportunity of appearing to act as an 'institution'. Thus, they are able to say 'The school decided' when in fact it was probably one stupid, head-in-the-sand person that became a teacher when they left school and has never ever experienced the 'real' world.

What a very stupid decision!

I was shocked to read about that case - as a medical student we are preached to about other religions and how we have to be culturally aware. I have a friend who takes his (Christian) faith very seriously. He works at a hospital where there are a lot of Asian origin Drs. He asked to change his on-calls so he wasn't working nights at Christmas. This was refused (not that surprising) but he was then astonished to be contacted asking to move the rota so one of the Muslim Drs could have Eid (?sp) off!! His response was predictable, and he now has Christmas off smile.gif

I do believe that many of these nonsense rules about jewellery and piggy banks are not made by those in touch with the general thinking. They seem to me to be an over-reaction. unsure.gif

What teaching diploma???

In answer to your question I do not know if all Sikh kids are religious or not? I was just repeating the story as I heard it on the radio. It was the report that stated the school considered the girl with the crucifix was not wearing it for religious purposes. I don't know whether this is correct or not as I do not know either the school of the children involved.

But I fully see your point about fairness, indeed I agree it is a perfectly valid argument to ban all forms of religious garments like they do in France. However, France has had its fair share of problems recently.
Reem
no why would they kick him out of his job?????
now I dont belive that it is just because he is christian !
Im a muslim and live in a muslim country , we have lotes of christian doctors over here and it is totally okay for me if a doctor looked after me

actually a christian doctor did my appendectomy last year and so what?? he is a PERSON after all , and a doctor too
what does the religion has to do with it !!!!!
SirPrancealot
reem,

its called politics, vested interests and noisy misanthropic do-gooders and nothing to do with religion.
in more sensible, mature cultures this rubbish doesnt happen.

when someone at last gets peace across all the -isms, this same noisy bunch will be back with a new lot of troubles - people with red hair or small feet or those who like classical music etc etc etc.

once upon a time in the uk, common sense had a place in our lives - no longer. i am 100percent in agreement with u, we're talking about persons serving the community. that's what counts surely.
