Hello!!
Does anyone know a good viola concerto or piece that you can show off to your friends. Telemann's viola concerto in G is great but i've being playing it for quite a long time already and i'm trying to found another concerto that's fun to play and sound great.
Any ideas will be appreciated

Bloch's Meditation and Processional. The Processional is on the Gr7 syllabus. Both are really good viola pieces, fully exploiting the viola's distinct tonal quality and range.

The following I believe are quite challenging, but here it goes!
Walton - Viola Concerto
Brahms - Sonatas in F minor and E flat Op.120
Bruch - 8 pieces for clarinet, viola and piano, concerto for clarinet and viola, kol nidrei (sp?)
Dittersdorf - Viola Concerto in D
Hoffmeister - Viola Concerto in B flat
Stamitz - Viola Concerto in D
Bach - Cello Suites transcribed for viola
Reger - 3 suites for viola solo

Bruch - Kol Nidrei
and
Romance in F are excellent short concert pieces, and so is the Hoffmeister Concerto in D, as well as Suite For Viola by Vaughn-Williams. Each of these are around grade 7-8 standard.

How 'bout the Yusupov Viola Tango Rock Concerto?

not sure it's published yet though
(and it's a magnitude of difficulty above Telemann...!)

How about Bach's cello suites arranged for viola? They exist, I'm sure. In fact, I think the violin ones have been done for viola too.

That wouldn't be hard to do, transpose down a 5th

The Cello Suites have been transcribed up a 5th and an octave for Violin!

Don't you hate listening to transposed music, especially when it's blatently designed for a certain key?
Still...I want the cello suites for violin.

Going the other way, the Bach Sonatas and Partitas (6), and the Brahms Sonatas for Violin (3) and Viola (2), are available in versions for cello at
http://www.amati.net/ , click "Cello Music".
The Brahms works are in the original keys as the site specifies the original piano accompaniment is used.

There are lists of viola music that has been set in the past by ABRSM, Guildhall School of Music and Drama, and Trinity College for the different grades at
http://www.viola.com/aebvlaYou should be able to find something suitable amongst those.
If you want more challenging pieces then you could look at

Anyone mentioned the Telemann viola concerto yet? Or Hoffmeister? Or Walton or Bartok...?

Telemann in G is taken, I heard Hoffmeister somewhere along the thread but please contribute some Walton and Bartok!

Vaughan Williams - Flos Campi (though you might need a few singers too!)
