Out of plain curiousity, what is your strongest section on the exam? I generally do best on my List A/B songs but I do well on the pieces and scales. However, I am terrible at the supporting tests (sight reading, aural).

I seem to have the knack for sight reading! I've always been pleased with my mark for it! although I've got my grade 8 clari and grade 5 piano tomorrow so saying that has probably jinxed it! I'm terrible at the aural section tho, the sight singing bit never comes out right!

Bizzarly, usually the list C piece. unsure.gif Sight reading in grade 6 flute was best of all, but sight reading on piano is hopeless.

I seem to do best usually in Section A, although for my Grade 2 piano I got 30/30 for my C piece (Strawberry Flip!). Scales used to be my stronger points - I got full marks in my Grade 1 and 2 - but they seem to have declined these days to just about passes. tongue.gif Sight reading I'm always dreadful at. At least I'm passing it now; for my Grade 1 and 2 I think I failed the sight reading part. Aurals I'm usually okay with. I have a problem with one or two sections (e.g. singing back from memory) but do OK in other parts.

I voted for Section A though.

Woo, what a great piece! Never did it in an exam though.

My best section is probably List C, not sure why, but I usually get better marks.

I usually perform better on the C peice and on scales. I love piano scales but not in grade 8 were there a 6th apart blink.gif violin scales are a nightmare ph34r.gif

For my singing: Grade 5 it was the C-list song and the unaccompanied song. Grade 8 it was the D-list song and the unaccompanied song. So for your poll I've chosen the C-list song

In all my recent exams (Grades 5 & 7 piano and Grade 8 recorder) I scored well on aural, so I've chosen that. Not surprising, really, as this is where being more experienced on my main instrument helps. It wasn't my highest mark for Grade 8 recorder, though, as I did better on the List A and B pieces. It was by far and away my best section on Grade 7 piano. ph34r.gif

I haven't kept enough of my flute mark sheets to be sure, but I think over all three instruments sight reading would be my most consistent high mark.

Oh country bumpkin, I've got my Grade 8 clarinet today at 3.30pm good luck to you what pieces are you doing ?

Scales and arpeggios are definitely my favourite part. I find them really easy and usually get almost full marks. Sight reading is my big let down, I've never got above 1/2 marks for it in any exam.

Good luck to you two having exams today!

The C piece I like because it usually has LOTS of room for expression, more so than the A and B anyway. But my best section is always the aurals, only lost one mark from them over my two exams. smile.gif

Sight Reading. I think it is.

Well I've only taken one exam but I scored full marks for the Aural, so I've chosen that!! (*hides from Nat & Steve H* ph34r.gif ).
crazy_purple_piano_freak
Usually pieces A and C....lol
Rainbow
Well, I've only taken one practical exam but I did best in the list A and C pieces and scales. It'll be interesting to see what will happen when I do my next exam....
Car Expert
I think I usually do best on the C pieces.

I do better on different sections on different instruments; on the piano, my pieces are normally the best (often piece A in particular), but on the oboe and sax sightreading is my best section, probably as I get more practice at sightreading on those instruments; through playing in orchestras, bands etc, and tend to do less practice on the other sections! Whereas, I don't have the same sight reading experience on the piano, and tend to do more practice on the other sections.

I do best in the Baroque piece (usually list A) or list C (modern one), followed by B or aural, scales and finally sight-reading.

I have different strengths and weaknesses on different instruments. I always do well on scales on the piano, but terribly on the violin. My sightreading is usually reasonable on both. However, I usually get distinctions for piano exams, and merits for violin, so my I suppose scales are really my only serious weakness....hmmm.........
benjaminja
The only section I got full marks for in my Grade 8 was sight-reading. Weird stuff.
anacrusis
C piece both times - strange, because I play the recorder because I love Baroque music...but play the modern ones better. Maybe it's because the poor examiner is relieved to get a break from the early stuff.
Helen
Well, I've only taken 1 ABRSM grade, although it was taken twice unsure.gif But, both times, it was list A. cool.gif
