Hi Reem

I think Oman looks really stunning. I have got a rather upmarket travel brochure with some fantastic holidays in Oman. I would love to go but can't afford it. sad.gif

Hadn't heard of it til now! I wouldn't be too bothered about people who don't know where your country is, I still have to explain to English people where I live in England!

It looks pretty though! What language do you speak?
Helen
Oooh Oman looks so nice!

Hi Reem

I wish my nearest beach (about 3 miles away) looked like that!! sad.gif

For those of us on the Fylde Coast/Greater Merseyside - see Reem's pictures ----and weep!!!

Whatever happened to Muscat? Did the country used to be known as Muscat and Oman or have I had too much Dairy Milk for breakfast?
Boo Radley
I'd heard of it. Next to Yemen, UAE and Saudi isn't it. Does look stunning I have to say, more lush than I expected. smile.gif

EDIT: Just realised it shows that on the map. Duh!

Looks nice. The nearest I've been was a refuelling stop in the UAE on the way to Thailand a few years ago smile.gif.

Looking at the map, Muscat is on the northern tip of Oman.

Excuse me, Merseyside North?! What about our beaches! Well, they're actually quite rubbish and I wouldn't go swimming in them, too cold and minging!

Ahh... don't yo just love the clean beaches of New Zealand
Warmer in the Coromandel, good surfing at Raglan, lots of spots for a bit of fishing, completely surrounded by beautiful ocean tongue.gif (that can get ****** freezing in the winter, but you don't need to know that, we just go skiing instead)

Is that the king who initiated the orchestra and chorus about 20 years ago?

In about 1990, I played in the string orchestra at Canford Summer School with some visiting string players from the Omani Army Orchestra. In those days, their technique was well in advance of their musical understanding and their English Musical Director had arranged for them to come to Canford so that they could experience some new styles of music among players who understood the traditions. They were very competent in the Baroque and Classical repertoire: the bass player could get round Brandenburg 3 far better than I could but found even Bass 3 of Strauss's "Metamorphosen" a great challenge.

Yes, the oud is the ancestor of the lute and the guitar. The Moors brought it to Spain and its name ("el oud") became corrupted to "lute". There are some internationally known groups ("World Music") that make use of it nowadays.

Oman is a desert country that covers an area of about 309,500 sq km (about 119,500 sq mi). There are no rivers or permanent lakes in Oman, but there are numerous oases which, together with wells, provide drinking water. Its borders with its neighbors, running mostly through barren desert, were the subjects of border disputes until the 1990s. Agreements were reached with Saudi Arabia in 1990, with Yemen in 1992, and with the UAE in 1993. The borders with Yemen and Saudi Arabia were demarcated in 1995; the border with the UAE awaits final demarcation.

A Natural Regions

Edit this section
Oman has five distinct geographical regions. In the north, the Al Bāţinah coastal plain along the Gulf of Oman coast is about 10 km (about 6 mi) wide and about 270 km (about 170 mi) long. It is the country’s main agricultural area and the location of the capital city.
