Hey,
I need some new clarinet music - about grade 6-8 standard. I'm gonna getv loads for me & my teacher to work through. I've looks at the mozart quintet, both brahms sonatas, the lyons sonata, the tartini concertini, the luto-thingy dance preludes & the weber concertos 1&2 & his concertino. Are they nice, or d'you reckon they may be a bit easy/hard. Any other suggestions? Thanks

I've accompanied the 2nd movement of the Weber 2 and the 1st of the Weber 1, and even part of the concertino. All of them are pretty hard. The 2nd of the Weber 2 is Grade 7, the 1st (and 3rd) of Weber 1 is Grade 8, and I believe the Concertino is about Grade 8/DipABRSM.

I've TRIED the Brahms Sonatas, all bar the 3rd movement of the F minor is at least Grade 6, Oh god the 1st of the F minor and finale to the E flat are horribly difficult to play! sad.gif

I've also done the Arnold Sonatina, 2nd movement isn't bad, 1st and 3rd are horribly difficult though! All of these are fab pieces though!

I recently got a book called "Ebony and Ivory"...it's full of jazzy-type pieces, grades 6-8. I would give it a try, it would be a big change from what you've been playing recently but it's still worth a look! (Especially "Beautifully Blue" and "Gone to Lunch"! smile.gif )

Of the pieces you've listed, Weber 2 is by far the hardest. If I was adding another composer, I'd suggest the Saint-Saens sonata. I did the second movement for my Grade 6 back in 198X; the first movement has been a Grade 7 piece in the past, and the last movement a Grade 8 piece.

Top tips if you're looking for new music are to raid the syllabus, or just go browsing in your local music shop. By the time you get to about Grade 6, there's alot of real music out there that's worth hearing.

I don't know what sort of standard you're at (there's a huge leap between Grades 6 and 7), so don't be disheartened if some pieces are too difficult at present. Think of them as goals for the future.

There is always the complete set of Finzi Bagatelles and also the Finzi and Stanford Clarinet Concertos. All lovely pieces.

Finzi Bagatelles are good.

Look on the grades 6-8 syllabus, there is lots of good music on there.
