On Lorraine Kelly's programme on GMTV today, there was a feature about a boy whose neighbours complained about him practising the Bagpipes. We had the misfortune of hearing the offensive instrument being played. Lorraine asked the right questions and the bottom line was that the neighbours objected to the Bagpipes being played in the garden, during the summer. The family and the boy felt this was unreasonable and his punishment may be an ASBO! I know it's nice to sit outside during the summer and read a book, but if I had been subjected to the noise of bagpipes, whether played well or badly, I think I would have had the Bagpipes decomissioned! I would object to having to listen to that on a nice quiet peaceful afternoon.

What do you all think?

The story goes that previously the local council had got this lad involved in promoting the bagpipes to other youngsters as a suitable instrument for learning..

Now they are looking to slap some kind of noise abatement order on him.. lol poor lad..

When I was at uni, a lad used to practice his pipes out the back of our halls of residence, in the middle of a large field. I had no problem with this until he chose a Sunday morning to squeeze the old wind bag. blink.gif

I think I'll remember to close my window when I'm practicing any instrument in future! biggrin.gif

Hmm, I play the bagpipes and I love the sound of them! I think they're a beautiful instrument with a lovely sound, not to mention the history and culture that so few other instruments could compare with. I understand the neighbours objections, but bagpipes are unsuitable for indoor practice, so his garden is probably the only decent practice space he can get. The neighbours should be glad of the free performance! wink.gif

I think an ASBO is going a bit far, but I would get really annoyed if he was stood in his garden. Indoors, I could tolerate bagpipes, but outside is just stupid!

Maybe his parents couldn't tolerate it indoors? ph34r.gif

lol IMO, a local leisure centre/warehouse/church/big hall should step in and let him use their premises out of hours...
