Hi i was wondering if you can teach yourself the flute. I am asking for a friend who was intrested in starting but doesnt have money for a teacher. (she already has plays piano and clarinet). Do you think you can teach yourself to a good enough standard or do you think you will need lessons to start with toget the basic right.
Ant Help will be greatley appreciated!!!

Yes, you can.
One of my best friends who I accompany quite a lot is self taught flute for about 18 months and is taking her Grade 7 Flute in June. She's had some pointers from teachers and fellow flautists as well as teaching herself.
The key thing is though, is not to get into any bad habits (Flautists will know this).

I never had a lesson in my life and got grade 8 flute - with merit. I wouldn't ever say iu can play the flute though.

I think she can, provided she already has knowledge of existing instruments.
I might start!

Sounds like me!
I played Clarinet and Piano before beginning to play the Flute and my woodwind teacher would give me perhaps one lesson a month to go over what I had been covering myself on Flute. With a good understanding of music already I'd say go for it, but preferably with someone available who can review your progress periodically.

I play the sax and teach my self the flute. The fingerings are mostly the same as the second 8ve of the (clarinet I think) so yeah go for it

I taught myself flute having played clarinet and piano so definitely, yes. It's always useful at some point though to get help from a teacher of the instrument or an already good player, which I did about six years later! I love the flute, did grade 6 last term and passed with very little help at all.

YOu just need some time and first just learn how to produce your notes, intonation etc. then begin with simple fingering, but don't rush or else you will miss things. So Take your time. Then begin with technique like tonguing etc. Then slowly start to try and play music and buildyou your technique as yougo. That's really
all you need to do.
Remember though, be pactient.
Hope that helps
Cool what grade are you on flute?
