smile.gif Hi all, I have replied to ASAGOHAN several times but my posts dont seem to be appearing, so I thought I may have more luck starting a new topic. Anyway my programme is............

Bach Prelude & Fugue in F# minor from WTC Bk1
Beethoven Pathetique sonaa complete (c minor opus 13)
Schubert Impromptu No 3 in Gb D899
Bartok Dance in Bulgarian rhythm No 2 from Mikrokosmos Vol 6

Anyone else doing DipABRSM this time?
asagohan
Hi yamaha,

What a wonderful yet challenging and balanced programme!
hgirl
I'm doing Dip.ABRSM!on horn though- not piano!
I'm a bit worried about my programme actually. It's:
Richard Strauss Horn Concerto No. 1 in E Flat (complete)
Hindemith Sonata 1939 for Horn and Piano (complete)
Arnold Cooke Rondo in B Flat for Horn and Piano.

The sonata and concerto take about 15 minutes each and are on the syllabus. The little rondo is about 3 minutes and it's my own choice. I don't particularly like it because it's quite cheesy and easy to play, but my teacher thinks I need a little 'filler' to balance out the longer ones. I know you're only supposed to play for 30-40 minutes and for brass players this includes breaks, so I'm OK with timing, but I feel like I'm not really doing enough as most people seem to be playing four or five pieces. I need reassurance here- it's in about 8 weeks!! Also, I still haven't written my programme notes.... any tips on those wd be greatly appreciated!

huh.gif smile.gif
Markx1
What a great programme! Good luck with it. The Pathetique sonata is one of my favourites.
isabel913
me
my programme is

Scarlatti sonata e minor and E Major
Beethoven Pathetique
Schubert Impromptu No 3 in Gb D899
Gershwin preludes I and II
the_pianist_87
im also doing dipabrsm in performing. my pieces:
Beethoven sonata op.2 no. 1 in f minor
Chopin nocturne op. 62 no. 2 in e major
Schumann nouvelette op. 21 no.1 in f major
Debussy sarabande from suite pour le piano

i wanted to do the gershwin, but my teacher said i couldnt since my hands are too small...sad.gif
can i ask how old you are, those of you doing dipabrsm? and how long have you been playing piano for?
cheers
--selma--
yamaha
hi all smile.gif

I have been playing approx 11 years now, I am 29 yrs old sad.gif Hehe

I love the pathetique sonata, one of my favourites, I am finding the 1st movement rather difficult though. I originally chose the Moonlight sonata because the 3rd movement is my absolute favourite, I gave up on this though as I thought it may be tricky to play accurately on the day, given nerves etc. ohmy.gif
isabel913
I've been playing for .....15 or 16 yrs..(?) I'm now 21 yrs old~

I love pathetique too, but I find the 3rd movement difficult ..(I donno why really....)
gershwin need big hand really...mine is not big too, so I've some problems with it...do you guys know any gershwin recordings I could buy for reference??

I was decided to play Bach Prelude & Fugue actually but I gave up cuz I don't think I can tackle it....(I played Prelude & Fugue in my Grade 8 exam...but didn't get a high mark on that..><)

cheers~
yanyan903
I'm going to have my DipABRSM exam v. soon @___@
It's on 25th May... >__<
I've been playin piano for 11 yrs too~
I'm 19 years old now sad.gif
my programme is,
Bach’s “No. 12 in F minor, BWV857”,
Mozart’s “Sonate in Bb, K. 570”,
Rachmaninoff’s “Prelude in G# minor, Op. 32 no. 12”
and Ravel’s “Sonatine”. rolleyes.gif
yamaha
Dont know when my diploma is, havent received a date yet. However, diplomas (in UK) are held over just 1 week starting the 19th July so I know it will be that week at least. Hope I get the 23rd July, more practice time! biggrin.gif

Yanyan..........25th May!! Bet you are excited/scared? unsure.gif

How do you feel about it, confident? Are your pieces 100% secure yet, mine sure aren't mad.gif
asagohan
hi, yanyan903

What is your teacher's suggestion on your program notes?

May I also know where do you come from?
the_pianist_87
ahhh im nervous!! guess what came in the mail today........ my official ABRSM letter with my exam date! 1 june!!!
i am sooo scared.. as soon as i opened the letter, i immediately sat down to practise and didnt get up for two hours!
anyhow, my programme notes arent done, and only the chopin and the 1st movt. of the beethoven sonata are fit for performance... i guess i better get a move on! smile.gif
i started playing when i was 8, and now im 17.. so ive been playing for 9 years.. i sort of feel inadequate, i dont think i should be taking the dipABRSM yet.. i think that if i fail, ill never play the piano again. playing means so much to me, that i would never forgive myself... ::sigh::
i dont know of any gershwin recordings, but you could try looking for Arthur Rubinstein, he's recorded so many pieces, im sure he recorded gershwin too, and he's an awesome virtuoso..
well, good luck to everyone!!!!
--selma--
Farley_Teacher
Have you checked the length of your programme? My programme is:

Bach Prelude No 14 F# minor
Beethoven Sonata Op 14 No 2 G Major
Debussy La Cathedral Engloutie
Chopin NOcturne in E flat
Bartok Bulgarion Dance No 2

THis may look a lot but now that it is getting up to speed it only lasts for 32 minutes, so I am getting a but worried that I will play it too fast on the day and go below the 30 minutes.
yamaha
hi smile.gif yanyan and the pianist

25th May and 1st June! ohmy.gif I wish you both the very best of luck smile.gif

Please keep us all updated on your progress and share your experiences of the exam blink.gif

I am still not really ready. sad.gif The Bach Prelude and Fugue is quite good now smile.gif
Pathetique 1st mvmnt.............. mad.gif enough said. 2nd and 3rd mvmnts coming along nicely though. smile.gif
Schubert................not too bad. ISABEL913........ how are you managing with the Schubert? huh.gif
Bartok. progressing quite well, dont really like it though wink.gif

How is everyone finding their teacher for the DipABRSM, I am receiving less help than I expected mad.gif
hgirl
Although my teacher is really experienced, because he only takes people of school age he has never had a pupil take a diploma before- I'm his first one! I'm doing Dip.ABRSM performing, and the only diploma he's ever done is Trinity teaching diploma about 25 years ago. I don't really think he knows about the standard expected, and he's certainly not very helpful when it comes to the Viva Voce/Programme Notes. I'm also worried about my choice of programme, but he can't reassure me cos he doesn't know anything! At least my diploma isn't for ages- 28th June (thank goodness!). Good luck to everyone doing theirs soon! biggrin.gif
isabel913
1st June >< best wishes to yanyan and the pianist!!
(exam is scary really.... I'll have my exam in October but dunno the date yet)

yamaha..when will you have yours?
Schubert's not too bad I hope, but I play the inner-part not even enough sometimes (quiet, even and with dynamics...=_=|||| and I play it bad whenever I feel sleepy)

Yesterday my teacher decided to change the programme from Scarlatti to Bach Prelude and Fugue D Major
Do you guys think I have enough time for it? cuz I never play Bach well. (I got a just pass in Prelude and Fugue in Grade 8|||||)

>>>How is everyone finding their teacher for the DipABRSM, I am receiving less help than I expected
mine's like...she's really helpful, but only in the early stage...so I'm now asking my friend help me to have another teacher (=_=but it may not be a wise decision to have a new teacher when exam is coming)

Have you started working on the programme note?

>>Farley_Teacher
32 mins is really dangerous....will you add one more to make it 35 mins? (it's more secure... I think)
I haven't time mine yet...but it should be about 35 mins or more
yamaha
Isabel........ Same here with the Schubert, inner part is sometimes a bit.....erm.. bumpy! Particularly at the quieter dynamics. I think it is a difficult piece to play well. Harder than it looks for sure !! biggrin.gif

Regarding your piece change to the Bach, I am not familiar with the Prelude and Fugue in D as I only have WTC part 1 but I too struggle with Bach. I personally wouldnt like to change at this stage but then I suppose it depends how much practice can you do?

How much pracice is everyone currently do by the way for the Diploma? For the last 6 weeks (since I decided to enter wink.gif ) I have been doing 3 hours a day with Sunday off.

I really should practice Sun as well, but I injured my hand a few weeks ago and had to have physio! ohmy.gif (Pathetique 1st movement tremolos) and am wary of overdoing it.
isabel913
I don't have 3 hrs for practice everyday....pretty busy really, and I sometimes even don't have time to have any practice for a whole week...(that's why I'm a bit worry with the Bach)

we should take a 30 mins break after every 1 1/2 hour of practice, and for the Pathetique 1st mov't, I even take a min break between each attempt or I know I'll injure my hand with that continuous action.

get well soon, yamaha

I'm going to work on my programme note...but there're too many books in the library and I think I may be confused with all those sources...(I hope my teacher could help me a bit when I've finished the 1st draft...)
yamaha
Hi smile.gif

Ah yes, Isabel, I see you are doing the Pathetique too, excellent. Do be careful with the first movement, dont try to force it up to speed too soon, I think that is how I injured my hand sad.gif It is a lot better now, but after a while of practicing Path 1st, I can tell its still there, not 100% healed. I am interested at what speed you are playing the 1st and 3rd movements, I have heard sooooo many different speeds for these two movements on various CDs. I worry that my playing will be too slow sad.gif

I think if you dont have much time for practice then maybe you should try and persuade your teacher to let you stick with the Scarlatti. However, maybe you are able to get pieces up to standard faster than I rolleyes.gif

Good luck with the programme notes, I am still working on mine, but I seem to spend ages reading and not find anything relevant! Dont forget to study the form of the pieces too, I have only just started the aspect of it on Monday! biggrin.gif
isabel913
yamaha...have u stopped practicing? it's not a good idea to keep on practicing with your hand injured. I've injured my hand once and only to have a good rest you can recover. (I've stopped playing for 2-3 months last time)

I dunno if mine is up to speed, the 1st mov't is at minim=138 and the 3rd mov't is minim=100 smile.gif

yamaha
hi isabel smile.gif

No, I havent stopped practicing, I know I should but with only 10 wks to go and not being ready.............. sad.gif

3rd movement is minim 100???? ohmy.gif I have never heard it played that fast, max is minim = 84. Wow minim 100, that must be hard blink.gif

My 3rd is currently at about minim= 74 mad.gif That must seem easy to you! My 1st is also muuuuucch slower than yours at minim=120 sad.gif

Do you teach as well Isabel? I noticed a post by you in the teachers forum earlier.
isabel913
hey yamaha~

10wks blink.gif hope you can get well before that... hmmm...just a suggestion...you can try chinese orthopedic (if there's such clinic in your place), I found it useful.

minim=84?? really =O=? hmmm...maybe I should try minim 84...(I'm actually still testing how fast I should play for the 3rd mov't ^^|||)

I think it's okay with 120, I use 138 just b'coz I want to have a significant difference between the introductary and the major part....(= =and the speed is never all of the piece about....*sigh*)

yea, I teach a number of students...
it's much easier to play than to teach...... dry.gif
yamaha
hi isabel smile.gif

Yes, I checked the CD again and speed is minim 84, that should make it significantly easier for you biggrin.gif I tried to play it at minim 100 after I read your post............ARGHHhhhhhh dry.gif

Glad to hear you think minim 120 ok for 1st, I think it sounds ok, would like to be able to play it faster though, maybe in time it will get easier rolleyes.gif

Are you doing performance diploma to enhance your eaching or just for personal goal? Have you done a teaching Diploma? I would like to do a teaching diploma afer Ive done a few in performance, so a long time off yet biggrin.gif

YANYAN smile.gif Geting close now, 25th May! Hows it going?
isabel913
hmm....maybe I play it at a speed too high...(I tend to play faster....= =||||)

that's just a personal goal actually...none of my students is at Grade 8 now so I think my diploma won't help them much (?)
I haven't read through the regulation of teaching diploma yet, but it seems that have to teach a student in front of the examiner? (or I've mixed it up with other exam's content= =?) Anyways...I don't consider the teaching diploma now cuz....it doesn't mean that I can teach well after doing that...

and .....=______= I think I won't have time to prepare a teaching diploma in the future....(= =I may give up most of my teaching in the near future actually....)
agnescyy
Please don take pathetique as your diploma songs if you are very good or perfect in your technique skill!cos I did this song b4!!!I can admit I cant do it very well!cos I heard a lot of people said, this song is not suitable for exam!
Digby
The problem with the Pathetique is everyone knows it so well so the slightest error in timing, tempo or notes stick out like a sore thumb. All these injured Left hands are very worrying, If you are suffering like this rest the arm - you don't have to not practise you can still make sure your right hand is accurate and clean and don't forget time away from the piano reading the score can be just as beneficial. Also practise relaxing your arm, take 5 minutes at the beginning of the practise just to concentrating on a completely tensionless arm, it will make all the difference.

Also if you are tensing up the chords at the end of the exposition sound horrible.

QUOTE
I love pathetique too, but I find the 3rd movement difficult ..(I donno why really....)

Its because of the triplets, getting them even (ta, te, ti) is an absolute nightmare.
yamaha
Hi Isabel smile.gif You dont have to teach a pupil in DipTeachinh exam, you have viva voce on teaching skills, a written submission and a quick study. You must also prepare 3 grade 6 pieces and perform extracts of these and discuss teaching issues as they arise.

You are probably right, diploma wont be of much help to lower grade students. wink.gif

Why are you considering giving up teaching, do you not enjoy it?Also, do you have any plans to take another performance diploma afer this one? I will see how I get on with this one before I make a decision biggrin.gif

Agnescyy smile.gif Its too late for me to change my diploma programme now, exam in approx 9 wks!! blink.gif ohmy.gif

Digby
Good luck Yamaha, don't worry the Pathetique is a good one to do, you just have to play absolutely accurately as they are more likely to notice if you're wrong.

not bcoz of this ^^||| but I tend to play fast....a bit too fast actually....so I always have to control my speed....|||||
*sigh* I play it not accurate enough......(especially that part with crosshand in the 1st mov't)

yamaha
I should say I enjoy teaching those practice everyday with heart...but here all of the students are busy with exam, test and activities...I know many of them can't back home until night, and they have to work on thousand of assignments at home then...
They're all occupied by school work and don't have time to practice AT ALL ......................
I don't love this kind of teaching cuz they never get the skill I want to them to have in that way (depressed)

>>>>>>do you have any plans to take another performance diploma afer this one?
I have no decision yet, just see how I do for this one...
even if I do well for this exam, I have to consider if I have time to prepare another exam^^||||

Hmmmm, I better get practicing then blink.gif LOL

Isabel........ I know what you mean, it does take a lot of work to prepare for the Dip, I didnt actually realise how much until recently dry.gif I still havent got my date yet, I await the postman everyday. Maybe tomorrow smile.gif

Had my lesson yesterday and I played really badly, felt soooo disheartened, I actually cried when I left (once I was safely out of view of course) sad.gif Sometimes I consider giving up sad.gif Anyone else ever feel that way?

the_pianist_87
pathetique sonata! wow, you guys are brave!!! smile.gif
I am doing the first Beethoven sonata in f minor, it's quite straightforward... my dad got me a mic and a recording MD set today, so I was able to record my whole recital (playing on my home piano, obviously), and now I'm listening to it and trying to see where I'm messing up. To all of you doing the Dip soon, i would advise you to do that! Although it's not so helpful at the early stages (when you know you really can't play the bloody piece!!!), afterwards it's great so you can see places where you unconsciously speed up, or slow down..
thanks to everyone's good wishes about my exam, it's in exactly 2 weeks! eeek! my programme notes are nearly done, i'm in the process of learning a "short" (7 pages typed on the computer-by me!!) history of music. I would be willing to send it by email to anyone who wants it, it's a good basic summary of all the musical periods... I wrote out the notes because it says in the guide to the viva voce that we should know the "trends" of the different musical periods. so, let me know! Otherwise, I'm about to compile some practise viva voce questions (e.g. "What is the style of this Beethoven sonata?").. hope i find the answers too! smile.gif My teacher has been of NO help with the viva voce, so I have asked the music teacher at school to have a mock Dip exam with me next week. However, my teacher helped me a lot with the research for the programme notes - so you guys, ask your teachers for resources, they're bound to have loads of them! --- they studied music, after all! smile.gif
well, good luck with practising. remember, you don't want to over-play the pieces, especially the faster movements of the Beethoven sonatas!
Take care everyone,
--selma--
yamaha
Hi the pianist smile.gif Thats a good idea, to tape your performance, I do this sometimes but daft as it may seem, I always play worse to my "electronic" audience! biggrin.gif I know its only a tape recorder, but it does feel more like a performance than just practicing alone blink.gif

yea...record own performance is really useful in some sense ^^ (I've got a mic and MD recorder too)
It's like....I'm my audience smile.gif

I want a copy too biggrin.gif

thx a lot !!!It's so kind of you~~~~~

Just out of interest: are you all playing your pieces from memory, or will you be using the music in the exam?
isabel913
I'll use the music...
I've tried to memorize the music.... but seems that I can't^^||||| (have a poor memory)

oh yes....do you know if I can use copies intead of original copies? or I have to bring along the books even if I use photocopies?
Digby
You are allowed to copy difficult page turns and give the examiner a photocopy which they will destroy afterwards but otherwise you have to use the book.
yamaha
My understanding is that you can NOT use photocopies at all. A copy of each work to be performed should be supplied for he examiners use, ideally in the same edition as the one you are perfoming from (ie an original, not a photocopy)

In the regulations section of the syllabus, it states (quote) 'Where a particular edition of music is quoted its use is recommended, though not compulsory. Candidates and teachers are reminded that the making or use of photocopies of copyright material is not permited.'

It also states that candidates may be allowed a page turner when this would be absolutely essential, and you have to apply in writing for this. This also seem seems to suggest that photocopies are not allowed. Shame sad.gif

Hope this is helpful

Yanyan smile.gif

Isn't your Diploma today? ohmy.gif GOOD LUCK biggrin.gif

Let us all know how it goes smile.gif
bourdour
Hey all....good luck to all of you who are about to take ur dipAB in piano....I just had mine on 4th of May... tongue.gif ...early in the morning at 9am..haha...had to wake up at 5.30am on that day to move the fingers abit before the thing.
I know it sounds trite, but anyone is nervous before any performance. Whats comforting to know is that the examiners really go all out to put u at ease. One of them will welcome you into the room and introduce you to the other examiner.(normally u'll find one examiner more friendly than the other who's more erm...serious...haha) And you get to try the piano before u perform, which is good if u simply could not get access to the room for practice prior to the examination day.
Jitters Jitters...i could hardly sleep the night before, haha...tossing n turning till about 2am( i went to bed at 11pm!)
Well, when all nerve-curbing techniques fail, do not forget to compose yourself before you strike the first note- before you start the "recital" . Tell yourself to feel for the music, and that its the music that counts. Forget about all technical insecurities and just throw yourself into the music. It always works for me, and when you really concentrate on the music and try to express your innermost feelings, u cannot sound as bad as u always think u do! lol
hmm...my programme was:
1) Bach Toccata No.2 in e minor BWV 914
2) Beethoven Sonata No.14 in c# minor "Moonlight"
3) Chopin Nocturne in E Op.62 No.2
4) Brahms Rhapsody no.2 in g minor
5) No. 149 of six dances in bulgarian rhythm, Microkosmos
Was about 40 minutes if i can remember correctly, without repeats in any piece.
yamaha
Hi bourdour smile.gif

Glad to hear your Diploma went okay, fingers crossed for the results eh? Moonlight sonata.................lovely, I was doing that one originally as the 3rd movement is my all time favourite piece, but changed to pathetique sonata as I found he 3rd movement of moonlight very difficult sad.gif However, with hindsight, I should have stuck with it as I found the first two movements okay, whereas with the pathetique I find the 1st AND 3rd movements difficult! LOL! mad.gif

Please share your experience of the viva voce and the sight reading. blink.gif Also, how was your performance, did you make any mistakes?
esther
bourdour, could you please tell me what questions have been asked in the viva section?

I will take my DipABRSM in November. Here is my programme:

1. J.S. Bach : Prelude and Fugue No.14 in F# minor (Part 1)
2. Mozart : Sonata in C, K309
3. Chopin : Nocturne in Bb minor, Op.9 No.1 (Own choice)
4. Shostakovich : Preludes nos.5 in D and 19 in Eb from "24 Preludes",Op.34

Yes, I checked the CD again and speed is minim 84

I wonder what recording of 3rd movement you are having.
I have 2 recordings at home and they are both about minin=100 at least.
Alvin
To isabel913:
Would you like to test how fast you can play for the 1st movement?
I think the first movement is better for this.
My brother can play minim=158 for 1st movement. The 3rd movement is just about minim=100, I don't think this movement can be played very fast.
I just started this piece for a short period of time so I can't play so fast.
I can play about minim=120 for 1st movement and minim=84 for 3rd movement, which is the same as yamaha~ biggrin.gif
Alvin
QUOTE (yamaha @ May 14 2004, 06:18 PM)
Yes, I checked the CD again and speed is minim 84

What version of the 3rd movement of the Pathetique sonata by Beethoven do you have?
I have 2 versions but both of them are around minim=100.
bourdour
yamaha: yea, keeping my fingers CROSSED for the results...sigh. Anyhow, the third movement of the moonlight is tough, especially when one has not been doing finger exercises and scales consistently. lol ... i could have composed myself better before starting on the third movement, there was one section when the left hand was a little slower than the right hand(dang!) But it got better as I raced through the piece( I COULD have played it at a slightly more controlled tempo... Perhaps about 5-6 wrong notes for the third movement (thank god for no break downs!)
There u go, advice for all taking the exams once again: COMPOSE YOURSELF BEFORE U START ANY PIECE OR SECTION! lol

As for the Pathetique sonata, ive friends who played it and they too said that the first and the third movements didnt go as well as they would like in the exam. well, lets all just pray...

Esther: The Viva Voce questions will be asked in accordance with your programme notes. If the programme notes are not well-researched, with interesting points that you could elaborate on (keep the written notes simple and interesting, leave the elaboration for Viva Voce), then it will definitely affect the marks for programme notes AND the Viva Voce.
When the examiner seems to be digging questions for you to answer, then you're probably doing well... lol
Here are the questions....if i can recall all of them.... with my answers in general, for those who are curious.(It would be more relevant if you guys refer to my programme in the previous posting)
1) You mentioned in your programme notes about the clavichord and the harpsichord being the prevalent instrument in Bach's time and not the piano. How do these instruments differ from the piano? (talk about the make of the instruments and how it affects the sound. For eg, for the harpsichord, the strings are plucked and as such, no tonal nuances are capable on the piano. In the clavichord, small metal tangents hit the string when the key is struck and so the sound is smaller than the pianoforte. etc etc)
2)You mentioned in your programme notes about "Countess Giudicelli- possibly Beethoven's Immortal Beloved" whom Beethoven dedicated the "Moonlight". What is the relevance of stating the possibility of her being his Immortal Beloved in your notes? ( Obviously, the dedicatee of any work is important and the relationship between the composer and the dedicatee of the work can help shape how we interpret the piece. Beethoven was said to have rejected the Countess, when she came back to him for lessons after marrying another man and going away for several years. There was some bitterness on his part, and this we can hear in the third movement, which has been said to be composed by Beethoven in a fit of jealous rage for a lost love. In this context, we would not think of the first movement as a funeral march as some would like to think it is. Instead, the first movement represents a certain pining and languishing.
3) And what was the keyboard instrument prevalent in Beethoven's time and how did it affect the music that was composed in his period? (the fortepiano, with a wooden frame and leather hammers, was used etc etc)
4)What other non-piano works did Beethoven compose?
(He wrote nine symphonies, a violin concerto...)
5) Did he also write chamber music?
(yes...the most famous of his chamber music has to be the Archduke Trio.)
6) And what is the trio? What instruments does it consist of?
(If im not wrong, it consists of the violin, cello and the piano....)
7) You mentioned in your programme notes about Bellini's operas having a similiar style to the Chopin's nocturne in E. Can you describe more about Bellini's opera and in what way is it simliar to the nocturnes?
8) You mentioned about "coloratura" in your programme notes...what does it mean?
( Sopranos... *examiners laugh* The term generally applies to sopranos..and I do have a recording of Bellini's La Somnambula with Joan Sutherland singing the lead role...and I cannot help but notice the similarities in the style of the phrases, the florid passages etc etc)
9) What other works did Brahm's compose, other than the rhapsody?
10) You mentioned that Brahms is more of an "orchestral" composer, can you explain this?
11) Who were Brahm's contemporaries?
(Chopin... Liszt...)
12) And what kind of music does Liszt write?
(mainly piano music...)
13) What is his music like? Are they easy or difficult to play?
(It tends to be a little showy sometimes...but generally difficult technically speaking... Liszt was like the Paganini of the piano...so...)
14) Have you played any of Liszt's music?
(Yes...the piano sonata.. *exams are shocked* I emphasized that I played only the easier chordal passages and they laughed)
15) Why did Bartok write the Mikrokosmos for?
( He wrote them as exercises for his son whom he taught the piano...then they gradually increased in numbers and became a complete set of exercises over time. )

Isn't it annoying when your teacher hasn't had anyone take that exam before?
I learn piano at school and my teacher normally takes pupils to grade 5 and then they leave and/or give up- so I was her first grade 7! It wasn't nice being the "guinea pig" and she didn't really know the syllabus- had had to do a lot of research on my own initiative to know exactly what was required of me! dry.gif

I find it more worrying than annoying! I just feel as though I'm not up to the standard of Dip.ABRSM, and although my teacher says I am, she's never had anyone else take it so I might not be! Oh, I'm soooo worried about it! 4 weeks to go! sad.gif

To isabel913:
Would you like to test how fast you can play for the 1st movement?

158 = =|||||| I can't play that fast...
I play roughly 138 for the 1st movement....100 for the 3rd movement...
