I failed my grade 5 theory the first time. Can't remember how old I was, but know I was still in primary school, so I was probably 10/11. I thought I understood it but obviously didn't!!!!! I did it the term later and got 88

WOW grade 5 theory is quite hard...and to have attempted it at that age is really good

I have a pupil who's 11 now doing grade 5 theory and it's made me realise how difficult it must've been for me at that age.
My parents are both musicians, though don't earn their living out of it, and they used to help me practice and support me a lot when I was younger. Hence, I flew through the grades, getting up to grade 5 in two years, so I had to do the theory to get any higher. I ended up doing my grade 8 at 14. I have always been very natural at blowey instruments, however, piano was a completely different matter!!!!!!!!
It didn't help that when I did my grade 5 theory, my brother took it at the same time, and he passed. He was two years older than me, so must've been 12/13, which is still quite young I think. He's now a composer!!! No wonder he found it all easy!
