Hi

I'm thinking of taking a DipABRSM diploma in instrumental teaching. One of the requirements is an essay of about 1800 words. Has anyone done this exam and how many books/articles did you read as research for the written submission? (Or did you just follow your intuition and not use this kind of material at all?)

Any thoughts appreciated!

Thanks.

Hi Benjaminja
Although 1800 words isn't too long it is extremely important to read round your subject. I would advise you to approach it in such a way that you increase your own knowledge through research. Of course you will have your own ideas and if you already teach you will have tried these out in practice which is great. Hopefully you have the syllabus - a good way of getting to grips with the requirement is to read the marking criteria on written submissions (pg 62) For example to gain a distinction in this area you need:

'pertinent and comprehensively argued submission, with good overall structure and use of language, and competently organized. Well documented and researched. Apposite use of musical and literary quotations'

A fail includes ' little evidence of background reading and research.'

One more point they may well discuss your submission during the viva.

Hope this helps. Good luck

Thanks, Margaret.

That's helpful. No, 1800 words doesn't seem very much - particularly after having had to write much longer essays at university. I'll try to track down some relevant articles/books etc...

I've just done the teaching dip myself, havent got the results yet though so I dont know if my written submission was any good. However, preparing for this really made me reflect on my teaching and I learnt a lot from it. Even if I dont pass, it was a worthwhile experience smile.gif smile.gif The exam is very enjoyable as well smile.gif
