need some help here.....

Especially in musical theatre but also in singing in general, do you think it is neccessary to be pretty.

Have you ever seen a singer on t.v, or a particularly a famous singer, that has not been quite pretty or good looking?

Having heard the other day that some quite prestigious musical theatre college base alot of there admissions on looks, so heres the question

do you need to be good looking to make it in the singing world, and i mean make it, like properly.

Look at Pavarotti. 'nuff said.

But Pavarotti's not of this generation, is he?
I think sadly there is an increasing tendency for looks to count a great deal (singers being fired for being too fat, for instance). I'm a bit shocked by the story about the musical theatre college though - where did you hear that? Clearly it's illegal apart from anything.

I agree, unfortunately looks play too much of a part in todays society.

I think it does play a part - especially for pop singers who are likely to appear on television - this is a sad fact. However, I think music theatre is different, especially as you are almost always likely to be playing other characters as opposed to appearing as yourself.

Of course it also depends on what "making it in the singing world properly" really means to you!

Although I doubt a place would officialy admit they do; obviously looks will come into the equation somewhere along the way. Sad but true..

But then again, on second thoughts- look at the 'pussycat dolls' laugh.gif

A friend of a friend situation i guess........i think its awfull that someone should be chosen over looks rather than talent, although unfortunatly i can see why it happens we do live in an increasingly superficial world where looks do appear to account of an awfull lot more.

I suppose music theatre is really the technical term for musicals - I don't think it would cover things like opera, but does cover operetta (such as G&S)

You can't do Music Theatre exams with ABRSM, but you can with the London College of Music, and Trinity College London.

With the mainstream Trinity Singing Exams, you can certainly flavour the repertoire with lots of musical theatre.

It is possible to do
Sound of Music - Rodgers, and The Lord is my Shepherd - Goodall for Grade 4 and select another Musical Song too. (Though for Grades above Grade 6 you have to sing a songs in 2 living European Languages, of which English may be one of them)
