I have an embarrassing confession to make: while I enjoy listening to all kinds of music, I've never really developed much of a music library. What would you regard as musical must haves, stuff that anyone who's serious about music should have in their collection? And what are your favourite recordings?

What should a good record collection have? Your favourite recordings of your favourite pieces!

There are some recordings which are generally reckoned to be definitive versions of a particular piece, but don't be disheartened if that particular performance leaves you cold. If you've heard a piece, are looking for a recording of it, and want to have one of the best performances available, both the Gramophone website and the CD Review pages of the BBC Radio 3 sites are good places to start looking.

Be warned, the critics don't necessarily agree amongst themselves as to which performance is best.

When I'm playing.. I love all the classical pieces in my exam books, somebody gave me some jazz and modern pop song sheet music for Christmas which I have enjoyed too.

I was up brought listening to Marley, Stones, Hendrix all sorts of guitar playing legends. From psychedelic and classic rock to blues and all sorts.. My dads record collection has thousands of vinyl and even more cd's which I am thankfully able to dive into any time I like and I appreciate all forms of music including many oddities including Zappa and Beefheart.

Oddly though, I'm also a hard dance fanatic and I love pounding rolling basslines and high quality electronic production. I enjoy clubbing and dancing like a fool to psytrance and breaks. Drum and Bass and breaks have their moments too.

Buy whatever you want to listen to! There is no one collection that means you're an elite music listener.. Most people would turn their noses up at my daily rotation of music. But, who cares? I know what I like.

Regarding classical music, there is advice for a basic library at Classical Net. You could look for free recordings at Classic Cat to decide whether you like a piece enough to buy a CD.

Oh, I know that. smile.gif I'm just interested in what others are listening to. I've often got a sense of what interests me by following leads from other people. It's a good way to learn your own taste. I wouldn't necessarily agree with your list, but I'd be interested to hear it.

OK, here are some that I'm listening to at the moment. I make no claim whatsoever that these are part of a serious musician's collection - I just like 'em.

Vaughan Williams - The London Symphony
Holst - The Planets
John Adams - Shaker Loops, Harmonium
Mozart - Jupiter Symphony
Karol Szymanowski: Métopes; Masques
Satie - just about anything
Phillip Glass - Different TRains

If only the Musical Genome project was covering classical music eh?

I listen to very little as I don't like background music at all.
I mostly have things to listen to when I go on holiday as I can't read when travelling but classical music is no good for this as train/plane/bus noise is too loud to haer the full range of dynamics.

...and here are some I'm listening to at the moment:

Vaughan Williams - Symphony No 5
Vaughan Williams - Willow-Wood
Sibelius - Symphony No 5
Mozart - Clarinet Quintet K581
Bach - Fugue in G Minor BWV 578
Purcell - Dido and Aeneas
Somervell - English Song Series
Tournemire - Improvisations
Gibbons - Anthems
Various solos & duets by Isobel Baillie & Kathleen Ferrier

....that's about it for now smile.gif
Fen
Ooh - thanks Jen W - I forgot Douglas Lilburn! Gotta fly the kiwi flag sometimes... If you like Sibelius you'll probably enjoy Lilburn.

Just downloaded the sibelius symphony and absolutely love it. I'll have a look for liburn too.

Interesting question.

I have a 'Great Music' listing that I picked up from some popular magazine or somewhere. Should have made a note of exactly where to give it some credibility perhaps. But it is a good list, and here it is:

Bach: Mass in B minor
Beethoven: Symphony #9
Mozart: Requiem
Chopin: Nocturnes
Brahms: German REquiem
Mahler: Symphony #6
R Strauss: Four Last Songs
Debussy: Preludes
Stravinsky: The Rite of Spring
Verdi: Aida
Puccini: La Boheme.

For what it's worth.

I expect there are lots of similar books, but here's one I just saw mentioned:

Quite embarassing selection here really, I noticed every other set is almost all classical!

Astrix - Artcore
Hypersonic - Freedom
Sesto Sento - Remixer

Psy Craft - Computech

More chilled stuff:

Sam Brown - 43 Minutes
RL Burnside - Mr Wizard
