Full Version: Differences Between Lcm Examinations And Trinity And Abrsm Examination

Dear all,

I was interested in finding out more about the differences between the diploma examinations between LCM, Trinity and ABRSM, in particular the Recital examinations from licentiate onwards for the various boards.

Apart from the different requirements set out as set out in the syllabuses, has anyone set for a exam at a single level (Ie LLCM and LTCL for instance) from different boards and are there any differences in terms of the atmosphere, difficulty, no. of examiners etc.... I hope those who have done so before can provide me with some insights as the syllabuses provide a more theoretical overview rather than an actual one.

Many thanks!

Hi!
I've done DipABRSM, ATCL and ALCM..
I've done LRSM, LTCL and LLCM is coming up in a couple of weeks..
This is in pipe organ.

I think LRSM and LLCM will compare in terms of intenseness since they will offer two examiners, one a specialist and one a generalist.

LRSM is more difficult in terms of longer recital time, the quick study and the viva. LLCM is more difficult in terms of pass mark. The number may actually not mean anything, the LRSM standard for a pass = 40% may be the same as LLCM = 75%.. If you see what I mean. Standard of repertoire is such that LRSM may actually be easier, but the recital is longer. Hard to tell..

For LTCL I had one specialist examiner.. the chief! Their recital diplomas should be treated just like that.. There are marks for platform etiquette, dress, appropriateness of the written notes etc. You should make a formal entrance etc. typically. No technical exercises either, so it is just like giving a public performance.

Interesting question. Perhaps I will have more to add on LLCM by the end of next week...

I know that LCM have 4 diplomas - the DipLCM comes in between grade 8 & ALCM. THe ALCM is about the equivalent to the dipABRSM, so you could take grade 8, then DipLCM before taking, the DipABRSM.

Don't forget for ALCM you have to sit a 3 hour theory paper as well as the practical exam, probably the equivalent of Grade 7 or so ABRSM.. I think you can avoid it if you do the version of the ALCM where you play the whole recital from memory.. I was never THAT brave!!
