Hellooooo,

Just wondering if anyone else on here plays the Bari Sax. I saved up the money to buy one in the summer and it's awesome!! At the moment I'm playing it in a Big Band and a production of Little Shop of Horrors, and having great fun.

Does anyone have any tips on playing it while standing up? I'm finding it quite hard at the moment. Also any suggestion on how to prove the intonation of the upper register. It sounds a bit crackly and feeble sometimes; its definitely very different playing it from the Alto!

Thnaks!

No idea about intonation apart from adjusting how hard you bite. I had the same problem with bass clarinet but quickly found it was my mouth smile.gif

As for standing up, you need a damn good sling! I find it hard to play big instruments (bass clarinet, bassoon, bass recorder to an extent) hard to play standing up and hence need a sling

you can get good slings for bassoons and bari saxes that are like harnesses and spread the weight across your whole body. I don't know how much they are, but I've seen a lot of professionals use them

smile.gif I don't play it, but I sure wish I had enough money to go out and buy one. They are fantastic instruments!

Harnesses seem to be a very good idea, as they avoid the strain on your neck that can result from using an ordinary sling. I've seen quite a few adult alto sax players using them recently.

Thanks for the advice. I do have a harness which is great when sitting down - my trevor james sax feels as light as a cloud! However, after a while playing standing up, the strain starts to get to me sad.gif

Hmmmm maybe it's a matter of just getting used to it!

That it's a sign that you really should focus on one or two instruments? After reading previous posts you've suggested learning cello, viola, violin, oboe etc, plus your current clarinet, sax and piano....Not wise
