I found the sheet music for this and I've fell in love with it, I'm playing it for fun as I'm studying the Grade 5 exam pieces just now.

Has anyone else played it? If so, any tips for the fast scale-like semiquavers in Bars 34, 45 etc. where it changes to Presto? I'm doing the usual "playing them slowly, gradually speeding up" but they're not coming along as fast as I would like them to be.

Thanks,

Doesn't need to be over fast but a contrast to the Adagio.
I found it helped to really know the repeating pattern in those parts.

I've played this! Lovely piece.

I think those semiquaver bits are in free time so it doesn't have to be the same tempo as the rest. You have to memorise it, really. There's a similar bit in the second movement, which I like.

I'd say it's a bit beyond grade 5, so don't worry.

I believe it's on the Grade 7 Trinity syllabus

It is. AB have set it for both grade 6 & 7 within the last 25 years. For me, grade 7 is more appropriate.

Hulk, I have an mp3 audio file of this; get in touch if you want a copy.

I agree...Grade 6 ohmy.gif Mad!

Speaking of previous syllabi, I would love to see the older syllabi to see what they set! smile.gif

I've played it, and it's a delicious piece. The trick about playing fast is a) make doubly sure your fingering is right, and cool.gif relax, relax, relax. If your arm is tense and your wrist is stiff, you're only ever going to sound clumsy and uneven. But you are right to start slowly, and speed up. I'd agree with others that it's somewhere around Grade 6/7, so if you're studying for Grade 5 this will be something of a challenge.

Thanks everyone for the replies/advice! smile.gif

Yeah I thought it was a bit harder than grade 5, but I love the piece, and the challenge of playing it!

My teacher gave me this piece as one of the first 'proper' pieces, after I passed my Grade 4. Of course, I found it very difficult at first and could not play it perfectly at all, but it gave me a big challenge and I really liked it! biggrin.gif Now it's one of my favourite pieces.

I agree, the scale like bit is in freetime so it can be as fast as you wish.

Such honesty is disarming!!

I realy like this piece and used to play it a lot. I can manage it all apart from the third set of 2 x 8 bars in the aleghretto, just before the final cadenza. I could never get that bit up to speed so always slowed down there. I would quite like to hear your MP3 file if you could send me it.

I decided to put the piece to one side and come back to it later.

Since studied the first two movements of the sonata in E flat (K282) which is fantastic piece. My ambition is to play this as my first complete sonata. My teacher recons this is grade 6, and if so then the Fantasy must be grade 7.

Over the past few days I've found myself looking at the aleghretto to the fanatsy again - think it's got a bit easier over the past 6 months despite not having loked at it.

Out of interest, there is an essay on the Mozart Fantasy in D Minor on www.teoria.com under Analysis and Theory articles

This seems also to be quite a good theory website.

It is an interesting piece. Mozart never listed it in his completed works, and the last few bars (from the dom 7th chord) were written by someone else to finis it of after his death. Mitsuko Uchida plays a different ending which I think is very atmospheric.

It is thought that he intended it to be an intyroduction to a larger work that was never written (like fantasy and sonata in C).
