Out of interest, are program notes needed for ATCL performance? I've tried looking at the syllabus but Acrobat reader is messing up a lot mad.gif
katyjay
Hi I-L

Yes they are, for both Performance and Recital exams.

Cheers

Careful though, the syllabus might well change by the time you get around to it. wink.gif

:faint: Oh dear....is it just like the ABRSM requirements or are they slightly different.

IL they're not exactly the same as the AB's: they're 200 (or 300 can't remember exactly) words. This means that in order to write about your pieces you've got to be very concise. I've only seen one person's ATCL programme notes: he had a sentence about each piece and two sentences about one of them, that's all the word count would allow. Don't know his result yet though.

I don't think that you need to be too worried about programme notes IL: it appears from your posts that your knowledge about music is one of your strengths.

They're a lot shorter - 300 words for ATCL, 500 for LTCL.

This means you can't indulge in a composer biography or general stylistic comments, and you absolutely can't waffle! You have to make each word count.

Thanks guys smile.gif So its pretty much just a general summing up of the pieces played?

AP...I'm guessing that's a compliment, thanks smile.gif

The ATCL needs a short programme note.

Writing no more than 100 words. smile.gif

Not true. Would be dangerous to be so brief. smile.gif As Katyjay says clearly above:

"Programme information should be limited to a total of c. 300 words for ATCL Performance or Recital and c. 500 words for LTCL Recital and FTCL Performance. Additionally, candidates may, at their discretion, introduce each item oth their program verbally. ..."

I can show you my rather lovely ATCL notes if you want. I did four pieces, each one had two or three short paragraphs which seemed to fit within the word limit... I think I got 9/10 for that and platform etiquette etc. Easy marks really, it's just the other 90 which are a bit harder to get.... wink.gif
katyjay
Similarly I could offer my ATCL notes, which got me 8/10. BUT they were under the old syllabus in 2004, so it was a limit of 100 words per work - and as I'm a singer that meant a LOT of words in total smile.gif

But if you want to see what you can say about one work in 100 words, do feel free to ask.

Thanks for the notes katyjay smile.gif

I think I'm gonna have a harder time than I thought writing these program notes unsure.gif What can I possibly say about a Baroque Sonata/Concerto, an early 20th/late 19th century recorder and piano piece and a Romantic era set of theme and variations?!

Chris, at the risk on incurring your wrath, you are far too early to be thinking about any diplomas yet. For goodness sake, you need to be the equivalent of a high distinction at grade 8 before you even THINK about entering for a diploma.

When are you going to ge tthose recorder recordings up?

Liz

Yes, the short programme note is needed in the ATCL examination. The limitation of words is about 100.

Chuangchun, you were incorrect when you said this earlier. You are still incorrect now. The word limit is mentioned in this thread by me and several other people - it is 300 words for ATCL.

If you are going to offer information on exam requirements, please check it's correct.

Cheers

There's a piccolo recording of you on the recordings site; the Dvorak Humouresque and the Schumann Traumerei you recorded on flute needed re-recording as they'd clipped horribly.
