To anyone who plays both the flute and piccolo - does learning the piccolo help your flute playing (since the piccolo embouchure needs to be 'firmer')?

Thanks,

do u get sheet music for piccolo or just use flute music? and is the piccolo much different to a flute?
tamsin
Depends, I have lots of music that is for both.

I found playing the picollo hard, I kept slipping into the second octave! Guess it would help to get the higher octaves on flute though.

Don't really know much about the piccolo- is it really just a minature flute?? huh.gif

we dont have piccolo's at our school but yesterday i was helping demonstrate the clarniet and flute to year 7's and i said to my head of music that it would be good to have some piccolo's for them to have a go at as well as flutes etc...

so emm we are gonna order them!!! laugh.gif

As a flute player with 22 years professional playing behind me ,I can say that playing the piccolo and putting some consistent practice in helps a great deal, as one of the most common faults with young flute players is to use to much air, too relaxed an embouchure and insufficient diaphragm- the point being that you can get away with it to some extent on the flute but the piccolo is not so forgiving and so acts as a sort of indicator of correct tone production. So the message is: try to do 15-20 minutes a day in addition to your flute practice and the benefits will build over time. biggrin.gif

Interesting, thanks. I think one of my problems is that I do use too much air, especially once I'm out of the bottom octave.

Yes it does help enormously. I am grade 3 flute now and intersperse my flute prac. by playing my piccolo and it really does help with tone production!:-)
