I got a Merit. My score was 128 - just two marks off a distinction!

Quite happy with that. Is it a good result?

The examiner said that there were "promising moments in my singing"!

Congratulations! smile.gif

You should be very happy with that - that's a great result! biggrin.gif Better than I did in my grade 4! And how lovely to have such nice comments!

Well done!

Yes, it's a good result. A flying start, you might say.

Onwards and upwards now biggrin.gif

Cheers

Thanks everyone! I have to say that after such a disappointment last year - being told I had "no instinct for singing" and basically "couldn't sing", its such a lovely feeling to have passed with a good result. I know its "only" Grade 4 but surely someone who had "no instinct" for singing couldn't have got this far with a merit?!

I must admit I've framed my certificate and keep looking lovingly at it! Heheheh. Might seem silly, but it means *so* much to me. I feel like I'm proving wrong all those people who tried to put me down!

My teacher asked me if I wanted to take a break from exams, but I said a resounding "no!" I'm looking forward to starting on Grade 5! As Katyjay says, onwards and upwards! wink.gif

Wooh! Way to go, Lady Moonlight! I like that attitude! biggrin.gif

Erm, YES !!!!!!!!!! biggrin.gif

Congratulations, I'm really pleased for you, and great to hear that you're going on to do Grade 5 now. There's no "only" about it, Grade 4 is an Intermediate Level, not a beginner's level. And it's inspiring to hear how you kept going, despite being told such a negative (and inaccurate) comment. I have a feeling that it won't be long before your Certificate has another one sitting next to it on the wall with "5" written on it!

Let us know what you plan to sing out of the 5 Syllabus.

Well done!

Now what silly idiot told you you had no instinct for singing?? Trust me, I'm a psychologist, and I can tell you that we haven't discovered the 'singing instinct' just yet! What a silly comment.

Revel in your success.

Thanks everyone.

I'm not feeling so good right now. Tonight my wonderfully talented just-been-accepted-into-RWCMD-and-has-the-bighead-to-prove-it brother decided to destroy my pride about doing well in my grade 4. He was (for a change!) going on (and on) about his audition and when he mentioned that a certain Prof - the person who told me I had "no instinct for singing" - was one of his auditioners I said "Well I sure showed that guy - I've just passed my Grade 4, so I must have an "instinct" for singing!"

Whereupon, my brother sneered and reminded me that Grade 4 is "what little kids do" and therefore means nothing in the realms of talent. He told me to come back to him when I can pass a diploma in singing like the girl he is currently seeing has just done. He also reminded me that a Prof at the RWCMD would know more about who had talent and who hadn't than "An examiner in a Grade 4 exam!".

I cried for an hour. Even my mum (who usually takes his side) has promised to "have words with him" about it. sad.gif

I'm going to state the obvious here. Treat that comment with the contempt it deserves.

Everyone has to start somewhere, and you've started with a very respectable Grade IV merit. Sure, some kids do Grade IV, but so do some adults. It doesn't invalidate your achievement that you are older than some others who take that exam.

Don't make comparisons with anyone else. Enjoy your own singing and develop your own skills for your own enjoyment.

Cheers

Some people would say that it's harder to enter these exams as an adult.

If that's how your brother treats/speaks to other people, then it probably won't be too long before the girl-with-a-diploma-in-singing gets fed up with him and dumps him! ph34r.gif

congratulations, LadyMoonlight. and don't listen to your brother or to the prof...

Your brother needs a good slap round the head with a frozen sea bass. Well done, that's a great mark, and don't let anyone else tell you differently. You should be proud.

Exactly how I felt about my flute exam the year before last. Such a great feeling to get a result that says, yes, you are actually musical!

It's a brilliant result - well done! I have plenty of adults, even in their 50s that start at grade 1 and work their way up. From never having a singing lesson before to getting a merit at Grade 4 is something to be proud of.
Keep going!

You see, Lady Moonlight? Another expert singing teacher tells you you've done well. Now will you believe it?
jod
Lady Moonlight, that's an excellent mark and one that you can be proud of.

And its not a case on "only" being Grade 4. Grade 4 - 5 according to the QCA are the performing standards necessary to do GCSE music, or an NVQ level 2 examination.

Don't listen to those who put you down. Build on the constructive criticism that your examiner has put in your report.

If your brother keeps this attitude, he is going to have a really unhappy time at Music College. I'm sorry to break it to him, but there can be a lot of ######yness in Music Departments, and there are a lot of talented people out there. He may think he's the bees knees now, but will be in for a shock when he hears the standard of the other musicians.
