Can anyone suggest any techniques or tips to try and keep your left-hand fingers up (2nd string)? Or does it just come from practice?

Do you mean curled, and pressing with the tip rather than the pad of your finger? And are we talking acoustic and classical or some other type and style of guitar?

If you get your thumb in the right position at the back of the neck, and ensure that you have a space between the pad of your palm and the neck of the guitar, you should be ok. The flat fingered thing tend to happen when you grip the neck. Just ease your hold and move your hand away from the back of the neck a little.

Not sure if that was what you were asking though!

Sorry I didn't explain myself properly, but yes, that's what I meant. I'm learning the acoustic guitar.

OK. Well, what I said already. Also, just a thought, are your nails on that hand really short? I need to trim mine at least once a week to keep them short enough to play. When you press on the tip of your nail, you really need to not be able to feel your nail, otherwise you're nail will prevent you from pressing down with your tip properly, and you'll slide onto the pad.

Any help?

Oh, just another thought - this is a particular problem if you're double jointed at the knuckles (I am). There's no real trick that I know of, just awareness, to sort that out.

Yep, that helps. Thanks!
