Just wondering, what is the worst piece that you have ever played?

It was awful! Dont know what it was called but i was working my way through a book and got to a piece with no barlines. My teacher said i should just try my best.
It had no tune to it and had lots of clashy notes and sounded hideous.
Ive not looked at it since!

I played a piece like that recently and the name of it skips my mind as well. There's another one that is nothing but quavers all the way through (can't say the name for obvious reasons) and it has the same tune going right the way through it and al that changes is the key.

My worst pieces are Arabesque and Tarantella.
They are very similar.
Every time I started one, it merged into the other and vice versa !
My fingers just take over and before I know it, i've swapped to the other.
I really like them both and would love to play one at our concerts but I know what would happen !
V.Annoying !

I doubt it. It just takes a bit of careful practise to play it well, and you need a lot of patience!

i dont have any patience....well not with that piece!!

May 15 2004, 02:06 PM
Just give it some time, and then you can decide whether you like it or not. Chances are you hate it because you can't play it and it makes you feel bad to not be able to play it, I get the same problem sometimes. It's just something you have to learn to deal with!

I can't think of exact songs. Some of the pieces we played in concert band were absolutely hideous. In some pieces the saxophones would have all of like 15 bars to play in the whole song and even then they were really boring and really easy. There were also some that went so fast and were so awkward. I have hand-eye coordination problems and half the time in those songs I would just end up giving up (Sketches of Spain by Dave Black for 2nd E flat alto saxophone especially).

Then again, some of the pieces we played were wonderful. Some of the songs, the percussions were acting like they were banging their heads in thin air halfway through the songs (Clowning around by Brian West), other songs we would play in a concert without the conductor (Not surprising they always went first) and the conductor only came in at the end of the song, but I think one of my favourites was the time when we would play the song (last song in the concert) and at various parts of the song various instrument players would leave the band and the rest of the band would continue playing. I can't remember many of the names of these songs however.
One of the songs that was really boring was Haydn Trumpet Concerto. A total of 57 bars rest. Plus 4 Bars of Oboe cue.

That really is a very hard piece to play! I've tried doing the 1st and 3rd movements piano parts and completely fell apart (Sightreading I mean)
A real pain to play! The 2nd movement is fine though! Just the matter of reading the thick chords.

It is, like a fair amount of Poulenc's music, quite hard to read sightreading! I mean the poor oboists that play the 3rd movement of his Oboe Sonata, no key signature with a string of flats!!!

Poulenc - uggh uggh ughhhhh! Ive had to stand the clarinet one, and then accompany my sister on the flute sonata. Now my daughter wants to play the flute one so I think Ill go and sit in my teenage sons room and listen to some gangster rap on Very loud with him instead.

Most definitely 'Small Small Big' by Jennifer Walsh its a Wind Ensemble 'piece' if you can call it that and utterly shocking. There's no music to it, just random notes. The band are not on stage. On stage there's 2 drummers, a cor anglais and a bass clarinet. Then theres the 'audience crowd' 'rear floor left crowd' floor left crowd' 'floor right crowd' balcony crowd' 'choir crowd' and 'outside brass' - who wander around OUTSIDE the concert hall and use timers to let them know when to come in.
It may sound exciting but believe me it is SHOCKING, and about 10 minutes long to boot!!!

I've found that the finales to the Clarinet AND Flute Sonatas by Poulenc are excessively fast. And being in the upper register for both of them DOESN'T help! 2nd movement of the Oboe Sonata again excessively fast but the 3rd is magnificent! <3
