I am applying for schools for next year, and in order to illustrate my extra-curricular involvements, I have the option of sending in a CD recording of my music (piano) with two tracks of contrasting styles.

However, while I understand how to record on tape, how do you record a CD? I have a digital voice recorder but I do not see how it can be transferred onto the computer as it has no USB. I attempted recording one of my piano pieces with the digital voice recorder, but the sound quality is...inadequate. Is there a special kind of recorder I need to buy in order to record my playing? Does anybody know any economically-efficient recorders?

Any additional tips on making a CD recording, such as setting, etc. are appreciated -- thanks.

Have you got a microphone that goes with your computer? You'll need some software as well, called Audacity, with an MP3 plugin. There is more details (kindly provided by YAP) here...

Have you asked them if they're willing to accept a tape instead? It may be that they just said CD because that's what's most commonly used now; but they may be equally willing to accept a tape, no harm in asking.

They specifically bolded CD Recording so I think they would not be too willing to accept tapes. Anyway, thanks for the information everybody.
