Full Version: Any Classical Guitar Students Around?
Forums > ABRSM > Adult Learners

Hi there,

I'm a newbie oldie and am very thrilled and encouraged to find so many adult learners here!!

After twiddling with the steel string guitar for @20 years now (and picked up many bad habits I'm sure!!), I've finally booked myself 4 trial classical guitar lessons. I'm hoping to enjoy the disciplined learning and to stay the course - and possibly to complete some classical guitar exams in the not too far future!!

Hi Earnest

Yeah, I play classical guitar. I've just started lessons after teaching myself, and playing for many years. Fortunately my teacher suggested I hadn't picked up any bad habits, which was rather a relief, as I had visions of him putting me back on Au Claire de Lune.

Good luck, and I hope you enjoy your lessons. You'll find other guitar players on the viva strings bit of this site.

i do play some classical....on an electric - not something to recommend as there are problems, like sustain is longer on an electric. i might one day try an acoustic and nylon strings.

good luck then and hope you enjoy.

Sorry to interrupt on the Adult Learners board, but just to let you know I'm a classical guitar student as well. I have only just started learning it a couple of months ago.

Thanks for the warm welcome!!

OK here comes the compulsive/obsessive bit for us adult learners - smile.gif which classical guitar would you recommend for @ US$1k? I'm shopping for a well made instrument that won't lose too much value should I resell - but at the same time, not too extravagant an aquisition.

I'm lost around classical guitar brands and was directed to an all solid wood Almansa. Its a cedar top which I fancy over spruce.

Grateful for any advice pls.

Well I am a spruce man myself, and I dare say you probably get some different makes on the US side of the pond that we don't get in the UK.
Rodriguez are a good quality instrument. The Yamaha's are always a safe bet, with even the less expensive ones being a much similar action but less tone quality. A friend of mine has a Takamine which is nice to play, but a bit thick in the sound for me because it's cedar.

Hi everyone!

Derek, it isn't really a good idea to put your e-mail address openly in a message like that - you're asking to get inundated with SPAM.

We have a system of Personal Messages that you can use for contacting someone directly away from the boards, and that's a more sensible way to get in touch.

Not only that, but not giving out e-mail addresses and not advertising things are part of our Forums Rules, which I suggest you have a quick look at.

Cheers

I'm sorry, Katyjay.

I definately didn't mean to overstep any boundaries, thanks for letting me know!
