I have a young pupil playing the Musette, Absil, List C.
Towards the end of the piece there is a leap from a high F to a chord around middle C register, without any rests. Is it acceptable for him to play this without using the pedal, as we haven't started on the pedal yet!

Many thanks

I don't know the piece and don't have a spare book handy. Clara's book suggests the use of the pedal though, but at grade 2, I wouldn't think there'd me too much of a problem without it.

But...why don't you start her off on the pedal now? I usually start it with my beginners, either the 1st or 2nd lesson. I know most teachers leave it to later, but I'm not most teachers laugh.gif

Bet your student would be thrilled to bits to be 'let lose' on it and it wouldn't take long to show her the technique

None of my G2s have done this piece (the call of Get in Step is just too much), but the teaching notes book also suggest a rit towards the end... I'm sure he wouldn't be penalised for not using the pedal (musically acceptable result seems to be the key phrase).

However, I do agree that pedal use is fun to start young! Even just as a game at first, though one of my students has the smallest hands and was playing the Rigadoon in her G2, so she pedalled the end of the 2nd and 4th lines so she didn't lose the octave notes.
