HI EVERYONE!
I am currently in year 11 and about to sit gcse music. My piano teacher asked me today what pieces i'd like to do for a-level performance. I am currently at grade 3 standard so i am looking at nice pieces of grade 5'6 level to learn intensley over the summer.
Any ideas???? Also any ideas for flute pieces at grade 4/5 standard also

Thanx a lot

If you post this again in the Student forum, you'll get a lot of replies from other people who have recently done A-level music, and may be able to give better advice - everyone here can tell you good pieces for grade 5/6 level on Piano, but only someone who's done the A-level can say what will give you the best marks.

it also depends what board you are with. diff boards do different amounts of performing and some only do ensemble or solo and some do both.

If you are currently grade 3 it is worth getting the G5 book and looking at what is in there,

There are pieces that need alot of technical development which you may find hard to perfect at your level and there are pieces that require more stamina development, so a longer piece that maybe technically easier so you need to spend more time looking ensuring you can shape it and play it well. The Kuhlau, is quite a nice one. but as DavidMusic says it is worth putting this in the student section.

Whatever you chose - good luck

I'm doing AS music this year- also play piano and flute smile.gif

The standard level of performance at AS is c.Grade 5, and c.Grade 6 for A2.

Try looking on http://www.abrsmpub.co.uk for pieces that aren't on the grade 5 or 6 list (i was told the examiners get bored of listening to these pieces over and over- plus, if you do something different, it will make you stand out from all of the others smile.gif ).

Suggestions for the piano are:
'Danza de la rosa' by Granados from 'A romantic sketchbook for the piano Bk 5- (which is around grade 6 standard)

'Le Petit Negre' by Debussy from Bk4 of the romantic sketchbook (around grade 5 standard)

Any of the 'Kinderscenen' by Schumann (between grades 3 and 6)

Some of the 'Spectrum' pieces are also nice- bk 3 is grade 3-7 standard.

Suggestions for the flute are:
'Sicilienne' by Faure- It's on the grade 5 list and is a very nice piece.

The 4 pieces from 'The Elements' by Robert Hinchliffe are also very nice- and around grade 5/6 standard.

good luck with your GCSE music btw smile.gif
