Thanks FC and semele. I should have added I have studied editing during my masters course, including Urtext, and the philosophy of reproducing the 'original', minor variations, other decisions made by editiors.
One thing I notice about AB editions (more a marketing ploy having their's on the syllabi) is they often have fingering marked in. For something like Bach where the middle parts can change between left and right hands frequently this can be useful, but can also erradicate independant thinking.
