I think a hyperbass flute you really would only feel the notes instead of hearing them! Unlike say a contrabass clarinet or sax or (bass)oon

Talking of bass instruments, have a look at the recorder jo.clarinet (nearest the camera) is playing here.

When I first saw one of these ( a Paetzold great bass, I think, ot it might be a contra) I thought it was the carrying case rather than the recorder. biggrin.gif

That's a contra I think, the SRC are due to get a new contra as the current Paetzold contra is terrible!

Look - this is a flute which can go down to C0!!

Is C0 the lowest C? How many octaves down would that be? I'm assuming the Cs are numbered C0, C1, C2 as they ascend... blink.gif

On the very very low notes on the bassoon, you can hear them, but boy can you also feel them! laugh.gif

omgosh, I'm small so I think I'd fall into the mouthpiece! Also...It looks like piping you get at the side of a house! *ponders ~ maybe I can make my own hyperbass flute* rolleyes.gif

This reminds me - totally irrelevent to woodwind, but A friend of a friend was on the tube with his double bass on his back, and the train came to a halt and he fell forward, but he couldn't get up because his DB was too heavy on him..Had me in stitches just imagining this grown man fighting to get up like a fish with this great big DB on his back laugh.gif

That's a pretty large flute that is.......
kayladavies
Imagine how much air that would require, considering how much a normal flute requires. ohmy.gif
psychofly
Thats really quite a big flute...

Speaking of big instruments, I thing it would be really fun to play an octo-contrabass clarinet...
Although there's only one in the world, in Mr. LeBlanc's personal collection, but there are still pieces written for it...

Just to show how big it is, here is one next to a normal contrabass:

Also... to show you how big a contrabass is anyway:

i think A0 on a contrabassoon (ie bottom note) is 22.5 Hz, and human hearing can only reach down to ~20Hz, so it's just within the range - but certainly, an ff bottom A would make your rib cage shake a bit!
psychofly
Well i just looked up that the octo-contrabass clarinet goes down to 15ish Hz... thats fairly low
mattrattley
the reed would need to be like a floorboard or something!

Good ol' infrasound. I believe some of the pipes of the Royal Albert Hall organ give out infrasound. Apparently some people find it very unsettling, they say it makes a room feel as though its haunted.

Trivia fact: Elephants communicate to each other over long distances using infrasound.

A good double-bass will do the same smile.gif

jo.clarinet
I only looked at this thread a couple of days ago and was quite surprised to find that I'm on it (on page 1)!
Yes, it is my beloved contrabass - not as pretty as the conventional ones, certainly, but a good deal less expensive, easier to carry about, and the sound is a lot fuller than that on most traditional contrabasses. I really enjoy playing it. smile.gif

You're famous, Jo biggrin.gif
