i started to play the piano 3 weeks ago and i've got grade 2 book and i can do it really well. i think i could be grade 5 in a couple of month. anyway i can read music and i play the trumpet(grade 8).

Well it depends on the person. I would say that is pretty fast, it does help that you can play trombone really well. I'm not sure about grade 5 in a couple of months. There is a lot to learn though.
Noodelz
There are a lot more scale to learn in grade 5 compared to grade 2, just wait till grade 8 and you'll start moaning. Playing the trumpet gives you a little headstart. You might just be really talented. You teacher is the best person to ask really.
Trebor
I'd be interested to know if you have a teacher...

To be Grade 2 standard in 3 weeks is impossible without some absolutely incredible prodigious talent.

Although it is feasible, if the piano is your 2nd instrument to take it up quickly, to be at actual grade 2 standard means to be able to play any grade 2 pieces AND the scales and be able to play them musically not just notebashing smile.gif

Haha, I Know, I don't know the guy but he seems kind of naive. Grade V in a couple of months?!?!?!

I agree. Your previous music experiance must have helped you a great deal o you piano but the Grades do get steadiy quite a bit harder (despite your trumpet experiance) and the standard of the scales and sightreading may not be quite up to standard.

My final word:
G2 in 3 weeks: possibly
G5 in two months: Very unlikely
ianfiat
Is 3 weeks actually long enough to learn the scales ?
hellokitty
maybe if you worked like 5 hours a day on them...
Dr Sean
Definately Not.

You want a respective mark.
You have to play musically understanding the music.
I was grade seven/eight within a year however.

Well it took me 9 months to pass grade 1.
Since when was learning music a race ?
I thought we played music because we enjoyed doing it !

ps It took me 4 years to get my PhD. Did anyone here do it in 3 days ?

Doesn't everyone? Two years 362 days to think ahh, this PhD thing is fun one doesn't have to do any work (until later) no idea what to do anyway; 3 days, aargh no more funding must write a thesis quickly wink.gif.

Fear not, those who treat playing music as a race can clearly be identified when one listens to their playing: they may have the piece of paper, but not much more. In the end hard work, appropriate repertoire and attention to detail pay off smile.gif.

Being grade 2 standard involves the following (if you are judging it by an ABRSM exam syllabus):
1) Being able to competently play at least three pieces from the book
2) Being familiar and fluent with all the relevant scales, arpeggios and broken chords
3) Being proficient at sight-reading music of that standard
4) Being able to master the aural tests

If you are that standard in three days then I take off my 7-foot long bowler hat, coat it in ketchup and eat it!

I had a student once who had been playing the piano for years yet never sat an exam. She took her Grade 4, and Grade 4 theory at the same time. Apart from putting herself through that pressure, I had to work like stink! She was erratic at practicing, she was registered disabled and her mother insisted I contacted the board for extra time as other exam boards had given her extra time. I had to arrange special visits too. The board were great. At one time I thought she wouldn't make it - she just took forever to learn her pieces, and teaching her to sight read was really hard. She got a distinction in her theory, and a pass for her practical.

She thinks she can play the piano, but if you think you would get to Grade 5 in a couple of months, think again!

Hmm, mustard or cranberry sauce with that? And it was three weeks smile.gif
To be fair, our original correspondant has grade 8 in trumpet, so at least only has to cope with the "how does this work on a piano", rather than from scratch aural. I admit this may not amount to a great pass!
I can't decide on this topic. Was it deliberately provocative, and if so, what does the "I got grade 8 in a year" amount to? a contra-troll? wink.gif
