Hi, I'm quite new here. I've only recently picked up violin after a few years but I was a beginner when I stopped (not even Gr1!). I'm having a problem with my chin rest. I initially thought it my shoulder rest so I adjusted it but I still couldn't get a relaxed posture. I know it isn't relaxed because my shoulder starts to hurt after like 3 minutes into playing. As a result, I cannot practice as much as I want to. I then tried putting a rolled towel above my chin rest and find that it's much more comfortable. Is anyone able to recommend a type of chin rest for me? I've heard there are a few types. Thanks alot!

Sounds like you want a high rest. Try a Wolf Secondo. They have extensions so they can go extremely high. I have mine about 1 inch high, maybe more, and I had a Kun before I got a Wolf, and always had shoulder and neck problems.

I think they are looking for a chin rest bohemian, not a shoulder rest.
Yes, there are lots of different chinrest designs and shapes that come in a variety of different sizes too. Best bet would be to find a violin shop that stocks a variety of chin rests, take your violin with you and try out them out in the shop. Mail order is fine, but only when you know exactly what you want.
It is possible the problem is a combination of chin rest and shoulder rest, but if you go to a specialist shop they can help you try out a miriad of combinations in shoulder and chin rests until you find what is right for you.

Whoops. In that case, I need help too!
You see lots of people with a cloth thing over their chin rest and it sort of goes over the side of the violin under the shoulder rest too. Surely if that makes it comfy then just use that?
If anyone could recommend one which is very flat on the left but more built up on the right at the ridgey bit, I would be grateful.

Hi, thanks for all your help. I got my chinrest today. It's a Stuber model. Bohemian, looks like you're looking for the same type as me. You might want to consider a Stuber model.

The chin part has like a hump. You can check out some pics on the internet. Just Google in "Stuber Violin".
