Visit your biggest local music store and go to the jazz section. If they let you listen to CD's before you buy them, ask to listen to some tracks. Listen to "A Kind of Blue" by Miles Davis. Listen to Louis Armstrong, Charlie Parker, Thelonius Monk, Art Tatum, the list is endless. Perhaps it would help if you bought a book about jazz and learned a little about jazz hsitory and what the main periods were and who the main players were/are. It helps to put it all into context.

After a while you'll find there are players and periods you are more drawn to. For many people, listening to "A Kind of Blue" is a revelation. For me it was Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli, the legendary gypsy jazz guitarist and his fellow jazz fiddler.

Don't make the mistake of under-estimating this music - there's such a wealth of material out there to listen to it's hard to know where to begin. I just believe it's important to start appreciating the whole world of jazz before you attempt to play jazz yourself.
