I am hoping to apply to the varying conservatoires to do a postgrad performance diploma. (flute) RNCM states - scales - as a requirement, well that could mean anything!!! Does any one know in more detail what they would expect. eg just 2 octaves or full range, what about in 3rds, 4ths etc - I mean the possibilities are endless making uninformed preparation an impossibility!
Similarly RAM state ABRSM grd 8 scales foR undergraduate (ok, fair enough) and diploma standard for post graduate - but none of the diplomas require scales so again, how do I know what they consider them to be. help!

Hmm, it's strange that you should be asked diploma scales when there aren't any! Maybe look at the diploma syllabi for Trinity (performace, not recital) and London College of Music (e.g. ALCM) and see what their requirements are? Might provide some direction...?

By the end of undergraduate at the RNCM, we had to be able to do scales in 3rds 4ths 5ths and 6ths, including chromatics, with them all extended up to top D. Not sure that they'd expect all of this in a post-grad audition, but it gives you an idea of what a music college undergrad will be able to do when yo9u're going in as a post-grad

thanks for that, I'd heard somthing similar cos I have a friend at the RNCM and his friend plays oboe and he'd mentioned about 3rds, 4th etc. What about types of arpeggios??!
